Great photos.
First looks like late victorian/edwardian from the style of dress, second certainly post WW2.
I work regularly at the Floral and Ive often wondered where this pier was as there seems no physical trace/marker left, assumed it was on the river side round by the old Chelsea Reach. Where was the Tower, also?
Posted By: pablo42 Re: New Brighton Ferry - 22nd Nov 2011 10:48am
Hi Ad, the ferry and Pier was at the bottom of Victoria Road. There is a small pump station where the Pier would have started. The Tower was at the top of the hill approx 150metres from the ferry. There are flats there now. I have some more photos I'll dig out for you

Was the last ferry boat to travel to New brighton the royal iris and was it about 1972.

They would be great to see. Was at the new Morrisons the other day with the missus whos a cockney girl, was explaining that we had a tower here once bigger than Blackpool's, and a pier better than Brighton's.

Don't forget that exactly on the Morrisons site was the largest outdoor pool in Europe

I just want to say thank's for putting these picture's on as i moved here a year ago and love seeing old history.Whilst walking the dog along the beach there still remain's sign's of the old pier and we often wondered what was there as it looked to us some sort of paddling pool but seeing the pier now it must be part of the base support.Keep them coming really appreciated ..

I'll do my best Mark. Trying not to put photos up that have already been posted. Spose it's better that they are up twice than not at all...

You have the tower building in the wrong place. Needs to be much further right. Note the first photo of the pier has no promenade entrance as it did later. Entrance was off the ferry pier.

It must date to before 1900, as the Promenade Pier to the left was until then only accessible from the Ferry Pier, as shown in the photo. In 1900 the Promenade Pier was extended to meet the Promenade, so that people could get onto it from the near end as well as the side.

I thought that myself Helles, though it was further up. The Big Dipper woulda been there if I remmeber it right. Well spotted about the promenade entrance

The turning circle for Tommy Mann's narrow gauge railway might have been a bit tight! An interesting photo/makeover but yes, the Tower would have been a bit further "inland".

I think that the chimney, was a clothing factory in Egerton Street. If my memory serves me right, it later became the Pink Elephant night club

Being demolished in the 70's, not by the clothes or funnels, so was it taken when it was being repaired in the 20's?
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Demolishing New Brighton Ferry - 17th Mar 2012 4:21pm
Wasn't one of the bridges replaced in the 60's after storm damage? Alexandra Screw Towing Co. still had steam tugs on the go then. It looks like one of them at the stage.

Some exellent views of New Brighton in its hey day when lots of people flocked there at week-ends and even holidays for people who lived afar.

Thanks for sharing.

Agree Pablo. Bank Holidays were best for picked up dropped money from under the boards of both piers.

Not so, it is the power station chimney that powered the Tower grounds. Used to be on what became the Tower coach and car park by the Rakers football club.

There was one at the Pink Elephant aka Grandmas, aka The Tick Tock restaurant and at one time a laundry and later peanut factory.
