Who remembers an ocean- going yacht being rammed by another vessel during the night when it's crew of three were asleep? It was in the very early sixties.....61 or 62 I think. I rember seeing the wreckage beached I think near Vale Park. I remember being amazed that I could clearly see a toilet on it below decks. Hordes of people descended and my mother was upset to see a youth run off with a smoking pipe belonging to one of the deceased.

i remember a friend who was a crew member on the New Brighton Lifeboat at this time mentioning this incident. The yacht was called the 'Flame' and was run down while at anchor by a spoil hopper which i think was owned by the dock board or westminster dredging.
I seem to remember him saying that one or more of the crew were rescued by the lifeboat crew from the water further upstream, and that the ramming was witnessed by some of the crew who had just left the yacht in a dingy in order to go ashore!
