Do you remember those innocent days of yesteryear, before 2005? A time when a person could fall over without any repercussions; a time when you could sing badly without the whole world mocking you; a time when a dog on a skateboard was only reserved for a slowly decaying comedy capers clip show.

What a horrible time that was. But now, hark at how the human race has evolved! Thanks to the launch of YouTube three years ago, the video viral phenomenon is now savoured, digested and devoured by a worldwide audience on a daily basis. All hail the revolution!

The idea of starring in a homemade video and then uploading it on the internet and becoming a star overnight has not only captured the attention of the general public, but also the attention of Hollywood, television execs, and the music industry. Everyone wants a piece of the viral action, and viewings of these videos tell you why. The most watched video on YouTube has had upwards of 53 million views and around 100 million views in total. Wowzer.

Alex Zane charts the rise of the video viral in Rude Tube. He's compiled a countdown of the top 50 video viral classics that have taken the world by storm. Be prepared for fun clips, weird clips, and some right online horrors. We don't want to spoil the rundown for you, so we won’t tell you what videos have been placed where, but below are five of our personal faves for you to feast your eyes upon...

There are certain types of videos online that defy belief, like say, a clip of hundreds of convicts in the Philippines dancing to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' in unison. That happened. It's here...

Another archetypal video upload classic is often found in the form of CCTV. Take the world's worst burglar for instance...

Some people on YouTube genuinely have talent, some people don't. Like this chap who stars in possibly the worst music video of all time...

Prevalent in the most popular videos on t'interweb is lip-syncing to pop tunes. Not so prevalent is lip-syncing to Romanian pop songs...

A proverbial treasure chest of laughs for the online generation has been unearthed with Bollywood films. Catch this clip as a man, who like a toddler, body pops to his heart's content...

If that's whetted your appetite don't forget to watch Rude Tube. Of course you can get an extra portion of video tomfoolery by directing yourself to 4Laughs, Channel 4's user-generated online comedy portal. We'd recommend you divert you eyes to following short bursts of hilarity:
