A man died on Thursday night after he was hit by a train at New Brighton, British Transport Police confirmed.

Commuters were put on replacement buses.

Merseyrail began informing customers of the incident via its website and Twitter shortly after 9pm.

"Due to a person hit by a train at New Brighton the New Brighton line is blocked," the Merseyrail statement read.

"Train services to New Brighton may be terminated at and started back from Birkenhead North.

"Disruption is expected until 23:59."

Advice to customers informed them that replacement road transport services were conveying passengers between New Brighton and Birkenhead North in both directions until further notice.

National Rail initially told customers that the New Brighton line would be closed until 11pm but a later update from Merseyrail pushed the time back to midnight.

Merseyrail announced at 10:15pm that the line had re-opened but some delays could be expected.

No further details about the man were released.

They announced over the speakers in Liverpool that it was due to a staffing shortage on the train so it had to be cancelled. We were trying to get back from The Who concert.
