Ive read on the internet that this has happened to people previously , but I dont really see a clear answer. Ive noticed the other day that MSE was running a full scan even if I clicked 'quick' . Didnt bother me as the results were 'no threat' . Now Ive become aware that the MSE icon in my bottom task bar thingy, is staying permanently on amber and if clicked on , says Im potentially at risk. I do a scan, update anything it says , and it goes green , only to find that next time I look its returned to amber and saying no check been run for a long time.

Ran Malware bytes (free trial for the full paid version), and it too says Im all clear. I want to do some banking, but is it safe to do so? Others have said its a waste of time uninstalling MSE and reinstalling it .

The problem is possibly that you are running MSE, this has virtually been abandoned. Any version of Windows above XP should be running Windows Defender instead.

What version of Windows are you running?

Check that your Windows Update settings also has "Update other Microsoft Products" ticked. Or if you are using XP you need to change to Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update.

I think that is all accurate, my memory isn't good enough to remember anything before Windows 10.

Windows 7 DD but in the update settings there isnt anything that says about updating other MS products?

No idea how to uninstall MSE , I click on it in the 'all programs' part of the start button , expecting it to show an uninstall option, but it doesnt .

To uninstall you need to go to Start then Control Panel then Programs, click on what you want to get rid of and click uninstall at the top of list.

Sorry, Windows 7 update is the same as XP, I thought they had changed it. To get it to do Microsoft updates visit http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate, its still best to change to that.

And yes, sorry again, for the same reason Windows 7 is stuck with MSE, not defender. In fact Windows 7 started off with Defender and they changed to MSE, despite Defender being on Windows 8 and above.

Malwarebytes is pretty reliable, if everything is switched on (in settings-application and settings-protection) I'd risk it. I always disable the free trial part (settings-account), if its going to run out anyway I don't see the point of having the additional features, I just run manual scans when I want.

Hi DD , thanks, yes I read somewhere that for W7 the Defender thing doesnt cut it as it allows one particularly bad virus in (name escapes me) , so, I decided to uninstall MSE with a view to re-installing it just incase it cured the fault of it returning to yellow alarm screen after saying it was clear. Problem was , I then didnt know what link to use to be sure I wasnt choosing a dodgy one , as there were loads of possibles to choose from . Duh! They all looked genuine , but all different , and even when I chose one to embark on , even that page seemed to have several download buttons ! Im on someone elses pc at the mo , but if you or anyone else for that matter , have a 'safe' link to download MSEssentials (my pc is 64bit if it makes a difference) Id be grateful --I can pick it up at the library . Might even take a chance and use my own laptop. Thanks

Thanks DD . That takes me to this . Do I tick both or do I choose the one which has a 64 in it as I have 64 bits whatever they are , according to me pc details . Presume they are both free , but dont want one to interfere with the other .

Choose the download that you want
File Name

ENUS\amd64\MSEInstall.exe

ENUS\x86\MSEInstall.exe

Microsoft has to call 64-bit AMD because AMD created the processor architecture first and hold the patents.

For a 64-bit system its the AMD64 version.

For a 32-bit system its the x86 version.
