I am looking for a budget gaming PC for my son for Christmas, and have spotted an i7 base unit for sale (if it still is available of course). I was looking for opinions as to if the motherboard and CPU combo are suitable for a gaming PC, as it is being sold as a business/server unit?

Motherboard: Supermicro X8STi-F

CPU: Intel Core i7-920 GHz Quad-Core

I just haven't found any reviews for the board.

Surely I could just stick a decent GPU into this and be good to go? (not interested in O/C)

No worries, it is sold now anyway.

its the i7 that makes it expensive.
You can get boards that will take the i3 i5 & i7
that way you can upgrade the processor as the game specs increase.

That was why I was quite keen on it, haven't seen many full i7 towers going for around the £250 mark.

I just wanted to make sure that the motherboard wasn't aimed too far towards server & business use. The specs of it looked fine to me (bar the lack of a decent gpu of course), but it has been a while since I worked on PCs in a business sense, so my experience of higher end boards and CPU's is limited due to budget restraints.

Makes no difference as it went anyway wink Thanks though smile

I know its a little over budget but for an extra £100 you could you could get the latest hardware that will play any games.

I use these all the time very competitive and the service is second to none,if you order before 2pm usually arrives the next day
