Can't a GAME retailer get a break?
Microsoft, SEGA and Activision are the latest set of publishers to remove future titles from GAME's shelves - merely adding to the UK retailer's troubles.
According to MCVUK's "leaked memo", the games that won't see the interior of a GAME or Gamestation store include Microsoft's Kinect Rush: a Disney/Pixar Adventure, Activision's Cabela Big Game Hunter 2012 and Zhu Zhu Babies along with SEGA's Yakuza: Dead Souls, PokePark 2 and Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai.
However, these aren't the only future releases pulled from GAME's lineup. Just recently Nintendo, Tecmo Koei, Capcom and Electronic Arts declared their lack of interest in stocking the retailer. This included Mass Effect 3 - which sold 3.5 million copies in its first weekend - and will mean in the next few weeks GAME will miss out on sales of Ninja Gaiden 3 and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.
The ongoing saga of GAME's demise looks set to come to a head in the next week or so, as that's all it has before entering administration according to hints from the CEO. However, several firms have shown interest in the beleaguered company, including Walmart, GameStop, Hilco and OpCapita so there still might be a rebirth of GAME in some new entity.
Whatever happens though, GAME - as it's currently known - will cease to exist in short order so check out your local retailer if you want a last dose of nostalgia - or partake in one of the many ongoing deals at the moment.

Long standing video game retail outlet GAME is in its death throes with staff being told to expect administrators to be called in within a fortnight if revenue can't be drastically improved.
Even with the rock bottom pricing sale that's now been initiated, it seems unlikely that anything big will happen in the next couple of weeks. Many are speculating that a buyout from another retail firm is the only possible saving grace for the company. The big one being talked about as a possibility is US firm Gamestop which has managed to stay relevant by breaking into the digital distribution market with its buying up of the Impulse game download service.
Visiting my local GAME last night, I spoke with a few staff members who were understandably anxious but remaining positive, hopeful that with the long standing history of the firm it will be a viable acquisition for someone or some entity that could fold it into its existing services.
Still, for anyone looking for cheap games, heading to your own local outlet might not be a bad thing. There are some quite contemporary titles - brand new - going for under £10, and many a great pre-owned game on Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles available for under £5.

yes been following this story for a month now.
i do think someone will step in.
when they do they need to close alot of stores.
multiple stores in the same area isnt a good idea these days.
they need to lower the prices to match or atleast come close to online retailers.

Game got greedy with their trade in prices charging £5 less than new for used copies.
the cheeky barstard.

what i have been doing for years is buying the games online with free postage and delivered 1 or 2 days ealier than new releases in the shops, all this for CHEAPER, go figure.

the only sad thing is the job losses.

That story is dated 9th March; a 3rd party entered negotiations with them yesterday (14th March).

Rumour is that it's Comet's owners.

the best thing that could happen would be if GAME, GAMESTATION and BLOCKBUSTER was bought out by 3 different companies and competed against each other.

and if GAME got rid of their nationwide trade in database, and give the power back to the sales assistants to price the preowned titles.

The GAME Group has gone into administration Photo:
Around 5,500 employees across the UK who work for the video games retailer 'GAME' face losing their jobs after the Hampshire-based firm went into administration on Monday.

The GAME Group employs 385 people at its headquarters in Basingstoke, with another 5,100 employees across the country in 'Game' and 'Gamestation' stores. The firm has a global reach and on its website claims to be 'Europe's leading specialist pc and video games retailer', with more than 1,300 stores worldwide and around 10,000 employees across the world.

PwC has been appointed administrator to the GAME Group's UK arm which consists of 609 stores. PwC said it is hopeful that 'Game' can be sold.

It is believed that there are three potential bidders including a consortium of banks led by the state-backed Royal Bank of Scotland; Game's American rival which is called 'Gamestop'; and OpCapita, which recently bought the electrical goods firm 'Comet'.

A message posted on the firm's website said that MJA Jervis and SD Maddison had been appointed as joint administrators of The GAME Group plc on 26th March 2012. The insolvency practitioners will manage the GAME Group's'affairs, business and property as their agents and without personal liability.'

The statement continues with a message for customers saying orders placed on the website were being reviewed and processed.

The GAME Group has had trading problems in recent months, and some of its suppliers had refused to stock the retailer with new products as its worsening finances came under increasing scrutiny.

The GAME Group has more than 1,300 stores worldwide Credit: GAME Group plc promotional material
"The (GAME) group has faced serious cashflow and profit issues over the recent past. It also has suffered from high fixed costs, an ambitious international roll-out and fluctuating working capital requirements.

"Despite these challenges, we believe that there is room for a specialist game retailer in the territories in which it operates, including its biggest one - the UK. As a result we are hopeful that a going-concern sale of the business is achievable."
