DO you have anything else downloading, e.g torrents or even anything like a virus checker on auto-update, they may be using your bandwith.

Other than that it goes on how far you live from the exchange. Will be the same speed with all isp's except cable.

Posted By: SoundLad Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 9th Mar 2008 10:54pm
Norton = Slow pc.. that might be your issue Gail.
Posted By: Waddi Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 9th Mar 2008 10:57pm
It may look idle but is it doing something in the background, e.g auto-upgrade.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 9th Mar 2008 11:18pm
I'm with Virgin Media paying £25 a month:

Speed Down 3836.71 Kbps ( 3.7 Mbps )
Speed Up 372.17 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

Cali - 1921.31
Gails - 1751.32
Whelan - 3455.09
Joe - 3836.71

Gail, yours is a good speed for just £5 a month
Posted By: Mark Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 10th Mar 2008 12:00am
Gail are you wireless ??
Or do you have a cable into your router?

If your wireless it can be a hundred things causing the
sigal to drop, ie baby monitors, mobile phones...

Best advice is to monitor it over a few days
before you start to panic wink

It can also depend upon the speed tester program,
as in where is it in the world etc..

3804.69 Kbps = me with a torrent running with a cable (8mb Sky)
1751.32 Kbps = Gail (8mb Sky)

i suspect your wireless and thats why?
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 10th Mar 2008 12:19am
how much you paying for your sky Mark?
Posted By: Mark Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 10th Mar 2008 12:37am
£17 + £5 = £23
You should be getting your broadband Joes for £6.95 for 2mb wink
Everyone else is smile

I have to pay £11 BT line rental.

DONT EVER TAKE A BLIND BIT OF NOTICE OF A SPEED TEST RESULT.

FULL STOP.

Lol. Seriously, the fooking lot of them are shit. I have proven this time and time again on these forums.

Matty is right listen to the man. I did the online speed test just now showing 2.4mbps??? Download

Then used Matty's ftp technique just now which is showing 3.14mbps Download

If anything it shows that chiccy has a slow connection.
Regardless if its accurate or not.

We have benchmarked the speed tester with various results,
so if you like its marginally calibrated for this topic.

There not accurate as there are so many variables,
but it has shown a possible issue for chiccy.

So we can help her now.
So in this case the speed test has highlighted a possible problem.

I guess with a group of people helping they can be useful for something.

Speedtest has highlighted nothing... it looks fine to me. Get an FTP test for it.

ADSL speeds are not guaranteed past 512Kbps. Mine runs at around 9Mbps, but that doesnt mean everyone on this forum would take o2 Broadband 8Mbps and get around 9Mbps... it just means, I have an extremely good phone line and am fairly close to the exchange, and o2 have left it uncapped.

If my phone line was shit and I was further away from the exchange, I might only see 1Mbps. A good example for DSL speed degredation is VDSL2 for instance, it can run at 250Mbps... but only within 20m of the exchange, it will lose 150Mbps+ as soon as you're line is 1.5km away.

Regardless, speed tests prove nothing... how come all these speeds tests tell me I have between a 3Mbps and 7Mbps connection downstream (they all vary) yet every single time I use FTP or download from a fast server, I am pulling at in excess of 1MB/s... because they are not to be trusted.

I think not only is the speed test maybe a bit low, but also people are getting somwhat confused by what the word "upto" means.

Also, take Pomp, he is on the exact same package as me, but whereas I can download at 9Mbps with ease, he only get's 3.2Mbps tops.

DSL excel's at uploading compared to some other technologies however, and even though his downstream is only 1/3 of mine, his upload is practically the same, if not a bit faster then mine!!

Lets see if she's wireless or cable connected.
I suspect the bottle neck is the wifi.
Posted By: MattLFC Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 10th Mar 2008 12:06pm
Quite possibly, but 1.7Mbps isnt too bad.

This is one of the reason's I swapped back to ethernet though, Wifi just cant be trusted to give enough throughput.

But never trust a speedtester... my reason for this is simple. Go by actual download speeds, not theoretical ones. Download the Cruisewirral DVD hehe!

im on 20meg broadband, altho my results will be hugely inaccurate anyway as gf's son is playin cod4 online on his pc just now... would probs see about 11/12Mbps otherwise.... tho when i downloaded a file matty gave me a link to i was seeing about 16/17Mbps so yea, these things r totally inaccurate... also depends on time of day and where the test servers are..

Speed Down 8065.09 Kbps ( 7.9 Mbps )
Speed Up 713.75 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )
Posted By: Civic_Coupe_Sean Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 10th Mar 2008 12:36pm
Speed Down 41.82 Kbps ( 0 Mbps )
Speed Up 18.55 Kbps ( 0 Mbps )

Mines the best raftl

You will be surprised by how little online gaming actually uses you're connection matey... It will be minscule and will have relatively little effect on you're overall connection speed.

So again, it look's as though the speed test is giving an inaccurate reading about you're connection.

Just avoid AOL/TalkTalk... bad bad news they are! Everyone on Digital Spy is having problems with AOL lately, and we all know of the problems with TalkTalk... funny how their both owned by CPW too lol.

Start a topic and list what options you have been looking at, and people will give you some advice etc...

yeh am wireless mark... an also sat to graces baby monitor with my mobile somewere near me.... :S
Posted By: Mark Re: yeh am thick but can any 1 help.... - 10th Mar 2008 11:27pm
Okay so now you have to think when this bottle neck started?
Is it because you moved the monitor near you?
Is it because your mobile is close or between you and your router?

Keep an eye on it,
you will find that most wiress set ups fluctuate up and down,
but you can still get a connection.

This is why we laugh when peeps think wireless is great,
its goog for short bursts but a pain if your online alot
as you see the weak signals and loss of connections more
than most people.

Either live with it, or think about a cable from your
laptop to your router wink
