Just found this site with satellites images of Cheshire 1971-1973 and it covers the whole of Wirral in a side by side format, with todays map on the right and 71-73 on the left.
You can see the M53 being built, the Wallasey Tunnel approach, and also the start of the Bidston to Moreton by-pass. It is a bit like a Google Earth from the 70's.
You can also change the map to a a few others as well. The tithe map is clickable on every field and dwelling, telling you the owner, occupier and its use. Unfortunately, most of Birkenhead is missing from this map, probably from being handled too much.

They seem to have reduced the resolution on those 1970's aerials recently which is annoying, it never was brilliant but I'm sure you used to be able to see the outline shape of houses which I couldn't the other day.
