Just got back from the Highlands where we stayed in an old Crofters Cottage, what the owners tend to do is, do up the inside to a high standard and all mod cons etc and leave the outside as was, original as possible. At the back was the remains of an out building which was possibly a food store or dry store for whatever. The ceiling was square edged timber boards and lined with old newspapers to stop any dust falling through. I counted 4 layers where it was starting to peel away.
Note the date.
