Formed in 1882 as the National Society of General Tool Makers, Engineers and Machinists, the Society later became known as the Amalgamated Society of General Toolmakers, Engineers and Machinists. A successful Union, it was one of the founders of the Federation of Engineering and Shipbuilding Trades and by 1915 could boast over 21000 members in 51 branches. The Union merged with other Unions to form the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1920.
