Wasn't it closed after they built the Wallasey tunnel as it was a feeder to Wallasey and wasn't needed.
Posted By: chriskay Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 12th Sep 2009 8:36am
The dock branch tunnel (Rendel St.) was closed in 1965, so 6 years before the Wallasey tunnel was built. It was probably closed for 2 reasons: 1.the decline of the docks, 2.the delays caused by the traffic lights at the junction.
Posted By: bert1 Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 12th Sep 2009 9:37am
Chris, do you mean delays caused at the junctions inside the tunnel, which i would totally agree with.
Posted By: chriskay Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 12th Sep 2009 10:48am
Yes, Bert; that's exactly what I mean. It must have caused great delays to the flow through the main tunnel.

I can see my old flat on the second pic - Scoops lived there too grin not with me I hasten to add raftl
Posted By: BandyCoot Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 17th Sep 2009 1:22pm
The dock entrance wasn't too bad when there wasn't much traffic on the roads anyway. As the increase in traffic ballooned they had to shut that entrance as it was indeed causing too much hassle.

Lookin at the third picture down, is that St Saviours church, Oxton on the horizon? If it is I didnt realise you could see it from that side of the hill. There must be fantastic views from the top.

Excellent ! - it's amazing how much has changed since 1990 !

The toll booth has gone with Corporation road junction with Rendel street completely remodelled.

The dishevelled one storey warehouse next to Egerton Dock is now the rather grand Egerton House which was originally refurbished for CEWTEC and is now 2 storeys (was originally a LNWR (London North Western Railway) warehouse and was badly damaged in WW2.

Also there are new roads and new units on the other side of Egerton Dock and of course no sign yet of the Twelve Quays Ro-Ro terminal.

Thanks for the Pictures !!!! cool

Anybody got similar from 10 years earlier - when I was working in a garage in Cleveland Street...?

I think that church is Christchurch (sic) on the corner of Bessborough Road and Christchurch Road - Oxton Village way.....
Don't know why St Saviours is not visible - it is at least as high up as Christchurch - if not quite a bit higher !!!

Can confirm that St Saviours is very visible from the other side of the hill - even from the car park of the 'Arrowe'!.

Yes Derek - definitely Christchurch.
I used to live in the right hand flat of that light coloured block of Georgian houses on Slatey Road - see the top flat which has had modern windows added to the side and looks very posh.

When I lived there the two right hand houses were flats and the exterior walls painted a horrible olive green !!!
Posted By: bigpete Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 17th Sep 2009 4:49pm
Do you know what I think I'm wrong looking the pointy bits...!
Posted By: diggingdeeper Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 17th Sep 2009 6:01pm
Er ..... Christchurch has a bloomin' great spire not a square tower. Try Oxton St Saviours!!!
Posted By: ghostly1 Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 17th Sep 2009 6:37pm
Well if it is St Saviours I might go and investigate, perhaps go up on the roof and take some pics. The view must be fantastic up there.

Heres a pic from the roof of St Saviours Tower

.....and some more!

Derek, do you have any higher res versions of these pics?
Posted By: derekdwc Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 3rd Oct 2009 11:12am
the first ones are from 4x5 negatives which I had scanned at 1200dpi by a photographer in Egremont and saved to disc as tiff files
Have another 15 but not been scanned
Any other pics I have with my camera set at 10megapixels

Hopefully one day I'll get a good samaritan to scan the others
Posted By: DavidB Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 3rd Oct 2009 11:16am
I can do them if you want?
Posted By: derekdwc Re: Pics 1989/1990 - 3rd Oct 2009 11:23am
Ihave a scanner that does 35mm negatives
Do you have one that does 4x5 negs in one go or stitch several parts together
Do you have an A3 colur printer

I used to live in Cleveland Gardens in 1987, top floor (13th), number 99, facing Liverpool. These views are pretty much what I had from my balcony. Liverpool lit up at night was spectacular. Wish I had a camera in those days.Sob!

Awesome topic, thanks Derek.

These flats are half dismantled now.

If I remember correctly if you look up Price Street you will see a ice cream factory that once use to be a prefabricated building where I use to have school dinners during my summer holidays. It looked a bit like the buildings in Eldon Street, but larger

i used to go there for my dinners in the summer holidays then,i lived on marion street.

Looking through old threads and come across this.
So much changes that you rarely notice until you look at the old pictures.
Great old and new pics Derek, cheers. Pity the flats are knocked down and unable to take some now, haha!
Any more along these lines Derek? wink
