Hi I'm trying to find out info on Birkenhead in 1860's. My Gt, Gt, Granddad came here from Ireland and I think worked at the docks before moving to Wigan. His name was Jeremiah Toohig or Twohig dob 1828. I know the family did not appear on the Birkenhead 1861 census but do show up in the 1871 Wigan census. 3 of his children were born in Birkenhead between 1862 -1867.
Any info on the what life was like in Birkenehead in the 1860's would be good or if anyone has links to the family.
Thanks

Check some creative spelling for the surmname. I couldn't find relatives called Hayes in Seacombe in the 1901 census because their surname was spelled Haighes

Your right I don't think many people could spell things right back then. I've found 17 differnet spellings of the name so far. Talk about needles and haystacks!!
