Hi,
I wondered if anyone on here can assist me with a bit of research. I'm looking to map any caves that are in existence in Wirral and west Cheshire. It's part of a bit of research in landscape archaeology but it's surprising how much local knowledge is considerably better than in books.
If you could list any that you know of, I'd be hugely appreciative.
Thanks,
Dean
frodsham caves, the dungeon at thrustaston and the caves on hilbre island are the only ones i know of, hope this helps??
I am sure there are more than this that other people on here will know of!!
There are caves in bidston village, DD will tell you, only thing is they`re in someones back garden, you can still see them as the fence is only small to stop horses getting out

New Brighton
A friend tells me that there used to be a tunnel he went in in the 50s the entrance to which was by the Red Nose rocks by the sunken car park New Brighton
He says it was eventually blocked off with rocks and cement
also Yellow Noses to the entrance in the guys' garden
The caves in New Brighton are called Wormhole Caves and are in the entrance to them is in the rear garden of Number 56 Wellington Road the house used to be owned by the architect Norman Kingham who also used to own the Fort Perch Rock and the Lighthouse
thanks for this everyone, much appreciated.
This is my fairly well known engraving of what I assume is the Red Noses, before reclamation almost covered them.Is it dateable?
Would that be Rock Villa in the background?
Description: Bartlett - New Brighton
That's from a steel engraving dated in the 1860's, there is one on ebay at the moment. Elsewhere it is dated c1840
my boss lives in rock villa and its all sandstone so the 1 in the front cant be (the white 1)

EBAYThe picture is taken from the book "The Ports, Harbours, Watering-Places, and Coast Scenery of Great Britain" by W H Bartlett which can be viewed
HEREThe picture was drawn by W H Bartlett and engraved by W Mossman
Thanks for the book gen. I have some of the prints and the pdf version has given me the description text. The book was published in 1842.
Other local views are of North Wales bridges, castles and harbours and on Merseyside the Canning Dock, St. Nicholas' Church, the Mersey and, of course, the New Brighton one.
The book is actually available as a smaller-sized reprint but the larger 2 volume original is on Abe for anything between £184 and £611, depending on condition.
