Hi all, I'm looking for any information anyone may have on the gypsy camp that was located in Lower Tranmere. I'm told this was in the Green lane area on Hinderton Field. I know where Hinderton Road is but as you can imagine, things look mighty different from them old days.
Does anybody have an old map that would show Hinderton Field as it was back then? Any information about the gypsies that lived there or the camp in general would be very much appreciated.
One other thing. Where was Lunar Street in Rock Ferry?
Cheers

Stegga; you don't say roughly what year. I don't think it was where Rock Retail Park is, that was railway sidings & carriage sheds. I think it was probably the small triangle of land between Holt Hill & Hinderton Rd., near the top of Green Lane. See map from about 1938. The other map shows Lunar St. It's not very clear, but it's a couple of streets above Rock Ferry station.

Can't remember exact year, around 75 ish i think, If rock retail park is where Wickes is, that's were i remember them, They appeared over night, we use to see them when we were going in to Lairds, the lads were worried about leaving their cars parked outside the yard by where they were. Also my cousin lived in Hinderton and he wasn't to happy about them being in the area. Some people believed if you never bought pegs off them they would give you a curse. Possibly true he's still got two heads.

I always thought if you DIDN'T buy anything- pegs, charms etc that they would curse you.

Have a look at http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps you can compare the tithe map from 186? (shows fields) to now,Birkenhead by the way is not on the Cheshire Tithe maps which is a shame,it shows Tranmere etc but stops at what now is Borough Road.

Is this the place they called Donkey Town? Or was that something else?

Thanks for all your replies. The maps are a great help. The tithe maps have an option to look at an arial view from the 1970s. You can plainly see what looks to me like a camp field. My wifes grandmother was a traveling gypsy who married a rock ferry man. Researching her family history has been a little bit difficult because of the lack of information on travelling gypsies. She married my wifes grandfather Frederick Taylor and settled in Lunar Street, Rock Ferry. My wife was actually born in the very same house.
On the arial pictures from the 70s you can see the new-build houses where Lunar Street stood. Don't suppose anyone has any old piccys of Lunar Street or any memories of the place.
