Caldy Rugby Football Club investigates claims players were offered secret cash deals

BOSSES at a top Merseyside rugby club are investigating claims their players were secretly offered thousands of pounds to play for them.

Caldy RFC has suspended a member amid claims players were privately offered wads of cash which never materialised.

A club spokesman said officials only learned of the claims when several players complained they didn’t receive the cash.

The 10 first team players reportedly admitted accepting cash deals to play for the team, based in Thurstaston, Wirral.

One player claimed he was offered more than £10,000 in retainers, appearance fees and bonuses. The players claim the side contracts were with a private company, set up by a club member. The club said eight of the 10 players claimed they were offered the deals before joining the side.
