I've got a cat, about 5 years old I reckon she is! I got her fully grown from someone who just didn't want her anymore! She's always been an outside cat, her previous owner let her out and I used to until I moved house! My previous address was surrounded by big gardens but where I've moved to is right in town on a busy road.
I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has had any success in turning an outside cat into an indoor one?! She's quite street smart generally but I think she has been hit by a car once before because she came home one day unable to jump ( turned out she had broken her pelvis) anyhow, I'm quite happy to keep her indoors from now on, she's using a litter tray no problem which was my main concern really, she seems happy enough, playing a lot more than she used to! I'm wanting to keep her In For her own safety really, if she goes out she's right on a busy main road and I don't want to lose her.
Rehoming is not an option!
So what do we think? Any thoughts? Tips?

We have a cat who was an outdoor cat at the start. Over the past year she has stayed in as her food is on tap, litter tray, peace and quiet, a nice warm place to sleep..... I think she prefers to stay in now!

hi Sambalina.so happy to actually see someone say..rehoming is not an option :)thats great.make sure your cat has plenty of toys to occupy herself.have you got a climbing cat post,so shes got something to climb and scratch on.best way keep her in and safe, much better than her being hit by a car frown i had to do that where i used to live and my cats were fine. good luck and she will soon adapt to being indoors smile x

She seems happy enough! I bought her a scratch post already, I may need to invest in some decent hard wearing toys though, she destroys them in seconds! Haha! She settled in quite quickly which I'm pleased about, I've had her for 3 years now so I was really worried how the move would affect her too but I think it's been easier because I've been there with her!
We can open the front door now and she makes no attempt to run out, and I don't have to pick her up to answer the door anymore!

I guess I'm feeling a bit guilty really, like I'm depriving her! At the minute though she's hanging upside down on the footstool next to the radiator fast asleep!

Yup, rehoming is not an option at all, she's my little mate, n at the end of the day she stays with me till the bitter end! I ain't getting rid of her, I will find a way to make this work out!

Some time ago I read that when you've moved to a new home with your cat, if you smear some vaseline on their paws, by the time they've licked it all off they've removed all the scent from their old home and lose the desire to wander looking for old familiar surroundings. Don't know if it works or not. Butter was also an option but apparently cats stomachs don't like it.

Butter works fine, with just a smear, or a dab of fish paste also works.
A couple of days licking their paws and all my cats have settled well.

The cat I had a number of years back was a stray when I took him in. He was very much an outdoors cat, he refused to stay in, no matter how hard I tried. He would even jump out of windows from upstairs!
I'm not trying to panic you, just be aware if puss wants to get out, she'll find a way!

How about getting her a cat tree/activity centre? Cats love to climb and be high up, and if you can place it right by a window, she can watch the outside world, and play and people watch to her heart's content!

Also, you could get some cat grass seeds, and grow a small tray of it for her to eat when she feels like it.

my cat is 11yrs old and she stays indoors, tho we do have a garden were she can wonder about but she never goes out of the garden, she has a litter tray in the house and she will come in from the garden to use it! she is quite happy as she is, she has always stayed close to home, i had another cat with her once and he would go out, he was street wise, could`nt of kept him in! but it does them no harm, that`s if their happy about it.

Thanks everyone! While she's happy to stay in then Im sure it will be fine but if she starts making out like she wants to be outside then I'll have to see how she goes, I just don't want her getting hit by a car here! She seems ok for now, doesn't seem like she wants to be out, she's fed and warm! Time will tell I guess!
