the rspca are appealing for information after a dog was thrown into the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Accrington with a weighted-down rucksack tied to him. The rough-haired terrier was found floating face-down under the bridge on Burnley Road (A678), near to Moorfield Way, Clayton Le Moors on Monday 2 August 2010.
The do...g was micro-chipped which lead the RSPCA to his owners."They had put him outside in the garden at around 7am that morning. Naturally they’re very upset about what’s happened,” said inspector Barr. The dog was called ‘Freddie’ and was just 18-months old. He’s described as mostly black, with a white stomach and tan patches on his face and legs. The rucksack was purple with black straps and a red ‘Head’ logo on it.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or has any information that could help should call the RSPCA cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.
Inspector Barr added: “We don’t want them to get away with this. This dog has suffered an awful death and someone is responsible for that. Please, if you think you can help, call us.”

What were the 'owners' doing, did'nt they notice the dog had gone missing! verysorry how far from the dogs home was the canal?

It's a shame that 'if' they are caught they don't tie a great lump of rock to them and throw them in the canal mad

We have a pigeon in our sports hall at work - called the RSPCA and they said they didn't have the resources to come and get it removed!!! It'll probably be setting off the alarms all night now - which will piss of community schools patrol raftl

Is it just me being cynical, or would anyone else not be surprised if we were to find out that it was the "owner" that did it?

I have been thinking about that all day. and I don't understand how it could of been anyone else.
I don't know if the dog was reported missing by the owners in the first place.
why would any one steal a puppy just to drown it? I know there are some sicko's around now but this was 7am when the dog first went missing!
why would anyone go to all that trouble with the bag and the ties etc? it looked too well planned to me.
It doesn't add up does it??

A lot of the older members on here will remember when it was common place to see dogs roaming the streets free, doing no harm and in the most part coming to no harm, people just use to open the door and let them out and the dogs use to come home when they felt like or were hungry. Where there were kids playing there was normally a few dogs playing with them. It wasn't unusual for a bitch in season to be chased all over the place by sometimes up to about ten dogs, all after what comes naturally, once caught and indulging in one of life's pleasures, it wasn't unusual to see someone come out and throw a bucket of water over them or hit them over the head with a yard brush, it was like an early form of contraception, though it very rarely worked. All this was a very common occurrence. Unfortunately when born those pups had to be dealt with, thankfully this practice of disposal is not used today or at least one would hope not, minutes after birth the pups were flushed down the toilet, the only ones that were not were those promised to someone. It use to happen to cat litters also. A barbaric act you would think but people didn't have the money for costly vet fees and thankfully ownership of pets has moved on. If they catch the person who's done this to the poor dog, i would love to see them get 10 years, but we all know thats not going to happen.

I'm wondering how yappy it's bark may have been. This could have been the work of a very pissed off neighbour who was sick of the noise. My parents' neighbours have 2 very yappy dogs and to make it worse they let them out at 6am every morning. I wonder if this happened here and the neighbour acted on their murderous thoughts towards the dog, that they may have harboured for some time.

Just a thought.
