The Farmer's Arms in 1876:

The Farmers Arms on Tunnel Road / Waterloo Place is first mentioned in the press in 1845 when it was owned and run by my GG grandfather, John Langley. He sold it in 1865 and the license was transferred to John Wheeler. For the next 20 years there were many licensees, at least 12, and they were frequently before the magistrates court accused of allowing drunkenness etc. In 1885, the license was transferred to the Boar's Head in the Market Square. The Magistrate queried whether there were not already enough pubs in that area to which the Head Constable replied that it would be the lesser evil to be rid of the Farmer's Arms. The building (12 Waterloo Place) then became a common lodging house. I do not know exactly when it was demolished.
