Agreed that we should never have gone there, it's like no one had heard of the Russian disaster in Afghanistan.
I think we shouldn't interfere with other countries problems because we always end up making it worse, you just need to look at Iraq and Libya.

I think Biden did the right thing, we have been there for 20 years and when you pull the covers back nothing has changed, corruption is still rife, the Afghans have sat back and let NATO police the country, the Taliban have been waiting in the wings all that time, the big cities well infiltrated with collusion and help from inside, the misogynist streak exists in all of them Taliban or otherwise, were we expected to stay indefinately ?

If in those 20 years we had attempted to reduce Afghanistan's dependence on exporting opium products it would have made sense, instead we protected the opium farms and increased exports, perpetuating Afghanistan's existence as a rogue nation and the misery and suffering caused by illicit opiates throughout the world, including the UK and USA.

Almost all of the world's illegal supply of opium originates in Afghanistan - over 90%.

I don't see why Biden's getting all the flack for this, it was Trump that sealed the order and negotiated with the Taliban..The US were supposed to have left by the 1st May, all Biden managed to do was negotiate an extension to that date, the Taliban were calling the shots, they clearly weren't going to agree to another extension past the 31st August, asking Biden to extend that date was futile, blaming him is ridiculous.

Should we have been there? I don't know, its extremely complex. All I would say is that we definitely should not have gone in without long term objectives and strategy for the country as a whole and basically our 20 years of efforts (whatever they were) have virtually been nullified.

If we had gone down the normal international political channel of plain bribery it would have achieved more for less cost.

So much for military precision. Great, IF you get the right target. ! Tragic..

The US has admitted that a drone strike in Kabul days before its military pullout killed 10 innocent people.

A US Central Command investigation found that an aid worker and nine members of his family, including seven children, died in the 29 August strike.

The youngest child, Sumaya, was just two years old.

The deadly strike happened days after a terror attack at Kabul airport, amid a frenzied evacuation effort following the Taliban's sudden return to power.

It was one of the US military's final acts in Afghanistan, before ending its 20-year operation in the country.

US intelligence had tracked the aid worker's car for eight hours, believing it was linked to IS-K militants - a local branch of the Islamic State (IS) group, US Central Command Gen Kenneth McKenzie said.

The investigation found the man's car had been seen at a compound associated with IS-K, and its movements aligned with other intelligence about the terror group's plans for an attack on Kabul airport.

At one point, a surveillance drone saw men loading what appeared to be explosives into the boot of the car, but it turned out to be containers of water.

Gen McKenzie described the strike as a "tragic mistake".

These poor people were hoping to be on a plane out of there.
How could US intelligence get this so wrong? This is very tragic indeed.
