Police and “hundreds” of local residents have spent the night searching for a missing five-year-old girl who was abducted while out playing near her home.

April Jones was last seen getting into a light coloured van which drove off in the Mid Wales town of Machynlleth yesterday evening.

Dyfed-Powys Police said they are becoming “increasingly concerned” for the missing youngster’s safety and have deployed a large number of officers and specialist teams to investigate the disappearance.

Hundreds of local residents in the small market town are said to have joined the hunt for April yesterday with many continuing their efforts overnight.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Powell said police were following a number of lines of inquiry.

He added: “Dyfed-Powys Police have launched an intensive search and criminal investigation into the abduction of a five-year-old girl, April Jones, in Machynlleth.

“April was last seen playing on a bicycle near her home address at around 7.30pm and was seen getting into what we believe was a light-coloured van which then drove off.”

He continued: “We are obviously becoming increasing concerned for her safety and are asking for any one with information to please contact us on 101.”

Up to 200 people congregated at Machynlleth Leisure Centre as news of the apparent abduction broke to help in the search for the missing girl, according to reports.

Police said April had been out in the town riding a bike with a friend before she vanished.

Local restaurant owner Razul Islam said a large majority of the town, which has a population of 2,000, was out in force searching for the five-year-old.

“There are hundreds of people out looking for her,” Mr Islam told Sky News last night.

“It is such a small town and nearly everyone is out looking for her – I’m shocked that it has happened in a town like this.”

Local petrol station owner Nerys Zjalic said she reopened her garage last night to help with the search.

Ms Zjalic, who runs Reads Garage, told ITV Wales: “My friend called to ask if we would open so people can get petrol to help in the search. Locals are out in full force searching for her.”

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live she said that some people had returned home overnight, but were planning to reconvene their search at 6.30am.

“It just shows the community spirit of the town and how people get together in a crisis to do anything they can to help,” she added.

Ms Zjalic, who knows the missing girl’s family, said people had been coming from far and wide to help with the search.

“It’s unbelievable – you just don’t think that something like that would happen in a small town like Machynlleth.

“Nothing will be the same again – this is a small little market town and you think children are quite safe but this shows us it’s not the case.”

She continued: “People just can’t believe such a thing has happened, the whole town is devastated and in shock.”

Police released three pictures of brown-haired April and urged anyone with information about the youngster’s disappearance to come forward.

Locals have also put up posters of April around the town as part of their search efforts.

Chris Dudley, who works at the Skinners Arms on Penrallt Street, said the pub was empty last night with many of the locals joining the search.

“All the locals are looking for her in this area – the cemeteries, the golf field, playing field, everywhere you can think of,” Mr Dudley said.

“Police are still looking.”

Mr Dudley said police officers were “everywhere” and they were also searching cars.

A man arrested in connection with the abduction of April Jones was known to the five-year-old’s family, it emerged tonight.

Police are also looking at whether April’s abduction is linked to another attempted abduction in the Aberystwyth area around one week ago.

It comes as police confirmed that they were also looking closely at the movements of known registered sex offenders living in the area.

It is also understood that the 46-year-old man being questioned is known to April’s family but is not a relation.

For April

We’re holding hands for April
And sharing prayers for her;
A little ray of sunshine,
Somewhere lost out there.

Dear Lord, we ask for you to guide
Those searching hard and fast;
Give them the strength, to hold the hope
And bring her home at last.

We’re all united in one grief,
Our hearts are in one place;
Please hear the prayers from each of us
And show your loving Grace.

The people of Machynlleth have reacted with shock at the news Mark Bridger has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of April Jones, but insist they are not giving up hope of finding the five-year-old alive

Following the murder arrest announcement, Machynlleth mayor Gareth Jones said: "We must remember that it is an arrest, not a charge. April is still out there somewhere. I am assured that police are redoubling efforts. There is hope and we must hold on to that hope. People are shocked and in tears and we are doing our best to comfort each other. Everyone is pulling together."

Volunteers in Machynlleth have told Daily Post reporter Hywel Trewyn they are not giving up on finding April. Nikki Hughes said: "I am not giving up, not until April is found."

Dave Cornell, 24, from Machynlleth said he felt physically sick at the news today. He said: "I live in Machynlleth, and I have got children we have been trying as much as we can to help. I have been up to Ceinws, Penegoes, Aberllyfenni, and Corris we've gone everywhere really. I'm ready to go wherever, they don't want us but I'm still going out. I'm a father myself, if it was my child I would hope people wouldn't give up, I'm not giving up."

Michael Williams, a Councillor who lives on Bryn y Gog estate, said: “The people have come together and will stay together.”

Breaking into tears, he added: “Now the family need support and we will not leave their side. They are a lovely family, let us hope that she will be found alive.”

He added: “Now(after the murder arrest announcement) it is all very subdued.

the longer the search goes on , the less chance they have on finding this little girl , who has health issues, i pray that they do, we should be able to let our children play out like we did,but unless we constantly watch em at all times and sit outside wwith them then these abductions will happen , when it gets dark children should be indoors, its so sad children nowadays can't enjoy what we took for granted years ago, its seem too common nowadays, what can we do to stop this happening,
