he can say what he wants, politically they're ours.
Agree with him.

Kinda laughable trying to carry on the colonial attitude in 2012.
Who is he to question idealogy and colonialism ?

Next up Sylvester Stallone and his views on the oil embargo in the straights of hormuz
Think of another small group of Islands, miles off-shore in the ocean, also an overseas territory and under threat.

Date - December 7, 1941
Location - Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory, United States
Result - Japanese major tactical victory
United States declaration of war on the Empire of Japan.

If the Americans applied the same policy back then, then Barack Abama might have been born Japanese. Perhaps they should mention that a the UN ....

Sean Penn is now heading a campaign to give Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma & Texas back to the Apache.
He must like Florida too much to give that back.

So, if it doesn't work out going back as far as the Native Indians, ask him if we can have Manhattan, and by the way, the Dutch would like the rest of New York, plus a number of Carribean islands. There again, so would the French and Spanish etc..
The dick should keep to bad acting. F@@k the Argies! Too many died in 1982 to even think of handing the Islands back. Also the Islanders are more British than a lot of British here! And they're not afraid to fly the Union flag!
So, going by some of the logic on this thread, none of us can criticise anything done by another foreign country.
Britain has done quite a few naughty things around the world throughout the last thousand years. Sean Penn has long been a critic of US foreign policy. Especially of the Bush regime's policies towards Latin America. In this he's been consistent in criticising what he sees as imperialistic policies so beloved of a number of governments.

Well the Falklanders better pack their bags then!
I didn't say that. Just that your logic is a bit strange. As a private citizen, Sean Penn is entitled to his opinion.

For us to give the islands back, implies they had it in the first place and that is not the case. The situation is akin to next door laying claim to my shed as its closer to their house.. That is after already trying to steel my shed! Its my shed its got my stuff in it and I don't care how close it is to your patio!

Fantastic analogy there!!

Sean Penn is like most Spams and doesn't have much appreciation of history, or geography for that matter. What he does do is jump on political bandwagons because he is right on. He is entitled to spout about what the Yanks do but what we do is none of his business. The Argies themselves have got short memories, our little spat in 82 got them out of a hole and rid of a military junta. They should be grateful instead of moaning, they should be so lucky that they get as much freedom as the Falklanders have. Before the usual dibs start having a go, I did a 6 month tour down there in the 80's and know just a teeny bit about the place and the locals.
I don't have a particular opinion on the future of the Falkland Islands. And Bandy, you're right about the awful Argentinian military dictatorship under Galtieri. However, I don't agree with you when you say foreigners can't criticise what our government does. If the UK does something bad, then other people have the right to condemn it.

The Yanks of course have a pretty bad record in Latin America, especially in Chile where the democratically elected government was overthrown by the military. Nixon, Kisinger and the C.I.A. approved of the murder of President Allende and thousands of innocent citizens. Thatcher also gave support to Pinochet and his goons. In this way, British foreign policy had a direct, negative effect on other people. Therefore, non-Brits very much have the right to condemn out government. Those in glass houses etc, etc...

why is it laughable, the people who live there want to remain part of the uk, their ancestors were there inhabiting the island before argentina was a nation
Sean Penn is a peacenik who beats the shoit out of his missus, "Peace Brother." If he sorted the USA out first and then lectured us to do the same then that would be a different kettle of fish. He's a champagne communist, the same as the rest of them.
There are no lily-white countries but what has been done has been done, it's history, but at least we should try and do the right thing. Handing the Falklands to Argentina would not be the right thing because those people are Falkland Islanders. Have a chat face to face with some of them before telling the world what they should do. I've spoken to some of them and believe me, they want to remain apart from Argentina in the same way that the Hawaiians want to stay as Spams.
What an excellent, informative and intelligent thread this is.
