Woman who was married to 5 men, friends blame her fondness for wedding cake and dresses.

Emily Horne is quite a woman. She is only 30 years of age but has already had five husbands, none of whom she has bothered to divorce – she is due to be sentenced for a single charge of bigamy next month. She first walked down the aisle the day after her 18th birthday with a man called Paul Rigby, whom she met at school. He says that she looked the "bee's knees" in a black dress – well if that doesn't say trouble, I don't know what does – "and a lacy thing over her head. Now I think it's a pity it didn't go round her neck."

Anyway, just over two years later she met a man called Sean Cunningham. They hadn't known each other very long when she presented him with an engagement ring that he was then to give to her. If I was Cunningham, I would have run a mile at this point; and to be fair to him, he does concede that as they had only known each other "two minutes" he did think they were "moving a bit fast". But still, he was fool enough to marry her.

Then came Chris Barrett. Chris ended up living with her and Sean Cunningham. But Horne soon moved out, leaving her second and third husband to comfort one another (are you still with me?). Husband number four was a chap called James Matthews, and husband number five a 25-year-old called Ashley Baker – she admitted on their honeymoon that their marriage was illegal, but he stuck with her for 10 months because "I loved her". It should also be known that for much of the time that she was married to these men, she was also engaged to someone else.

The whole thing is quite exhausting, and reminds me of that swarthy Steve Coogan character Tony Ferrino, who fancied himself as a bit of a ladies man and sang a song that went something along the lines of, "Bigamy at Christmas, what am I to do? Spend it with the family? I can't, I've got two."

We expect bigamists to be men, and there is part of me that rather admires Horne for her sheer bravado, not to mention stamina. Yet she is clearly as mad as a box of frogs. Her friends have defended her; they say that she is just quite fond of wedding cake and dresses. But then so are most women, and on the whole they find it difficult to get one man down the aisle, let alone five.

Emily Horne's "husbands" accuse her of being manipulative, which is just another way of admitting to being a bit credulous. And I can't help thinking that, frankly, all six of these mugs belong together.

That reminds me of how my parents got engaged. While Dad was at sea as a ship's carpenter, mother wrote him a letter telling him that they were now engaged & she'd bought the ring, which he could pay for when he got back.
