Armed robber with squint jailed

An armed robber has been jailed for four years after being caught because of the distinctive squint in his eyes.

Robert Davies, 33, of Newport, held up a bookies shop in the city where he was known by his nickname of "squinty".

Cardiff Crown Court heard he had a hoodie tied up across his face - but not enough to cover his giveaway eyes.

Davies admitted robbery and possession of an imitation firearm. Getaway driver Colin Chapman, 44, of Newport, was found guilty of the charges and jailed.

He will be jailed for six years after a jury trial after denying he took part.

Prosecutor Ieuan Morris said: "It was a bungled attempt. Davies shoved a note to the cashier saying: 'give me the money I've got a gun.'

"He had a hoodie up, tied across his face but it wasn't fully hidden.

"He was recognised by the cashier. She knew him as 'Squinty' - someone who would hang around the betting shop and make small bets."

Fingerprints

The court was told "inept" Davies also left a handwritten note with the betting shop cashiers which had his fingerprints on.

Davies, along with Chapman held up a Newport branch of William Hill with what appeared to be a rifle and made off with £200.

Mr Morris said Chapman was the getaway driver who drove the pair from the scene.

The weapon they had turned out to be a metal bar and not a rifle as believed by the bookmakers.

Judge Roderick Denyer said: "It was inept, but it was frightening and money was taken."
