Watchdog investigates man's death
The death of a man in Cardiff is to be investigated by the watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
The man, who was aged 35, is believed to have collapsed after being restrained following an incident at a house in Llandaff North.
Officers were called to the property at about 0420 BST on Thursday after reports of a disturbance.
The individual was pronounced dead in hospital just over an hour later.
IPCC Commissioner for Wales Tom Davies said: "This will be an independent investigation and will be carried out by our investigators in a timely and proportionate way.
"The IPCC investigation will concentrate on the events after the police arrived at the house, while South Wales Police will investigate the events leading up to the arrival of the police officers."
It is understood that the dead man was a lodger at the property in Llandaff North.
Handcuffs
In a statement, the watchdog said that when officers from South Wales Police arrived at the house, the man was already being restrained by occupants.
Officers then also restrained the individual, before handcuffing him and leading him from the home.
It was at this point that he is understood to have collapsed.
Attempts were made to resuscitate him, and an ambulance was called. He was declared dead at the University Hospital of Wales in the city at 0523 BST.
The IPCC said it had already deployed two of its investigators to the scene.
The dead man has yet to be named, while attempts are made to contact his relatives.
A post mortem examination to establish how he died will take later on Thursday or on Friday.
