'Thatcher's mother should have believed in abortion:' Firebrand Derek Hatton's 'obnoxious' slur on former PM

Left-winger Derek Hatton has made an astonishing attack on Baroness Thatcher, saying it was a 'shame' she had ever been born.

The former deputy leader of Liverpool Council criticised the former Prime Minister's mother for 'not believing in abortion'.

Mr Hatton, expelled from the Labour Party by Neil Kinnock in 1986 for being in Militant Tendency, made his comments in an interview in Cyprus, where he runs a property company.

He was asked if he had 'warmed' to 84-year-old Lady Thatcher now that she is an 'old lady'.

'The only problem I've got with her, with her mother, is that she never believed in abortion,' he told the Cyprus Mail.

'She more than anybody destroyed the world we knew in England and she created a situation which actually produced the financial problems we have now. She is responsible for the current mess.'

His remarks prompted widespread condemnation.

Lord Tebbit, former Conservative Party chairman and Cabinet Minister, said: 'It is always unpleasant even thinking about Derek Hatton. But this is exactly the sort of thing that I expect would come out of the mouth of such a low-grade slob.'

A close family friend of Lady Thatcher said: 'I can't imagine she'd give this a second thought. He's not worth it.

'He's made a career out of saying obnoxious things.' And a senior Tory source said: 'These remarks are beneath contempt. This man does not deserve to be taken seriously.'

Nadine Dorries, an anti-abortion Conservative MP, said: 'These comments are incredibly distasteful and disrespectful.

'They are not ones that anybody would want used about them.

'The general public has become more aware of the abortion debate. These comments would have been offensive before, but they are even more offensive now.'

Mr Hatton later stood by his views, telling the Daily Mail: 'I do think she destroyed the country in the 1980s.

'She destroyed community as we know it and then she paved the way for the most greedy people around which has produced the crisis we're in. It's a shame she was born.'

When asked if his comments were offensive, he responded: 'It's no more offensive than what she did to millions of people. In fact, it's less offensive than what she did to lots of people.'

Since being thrown out of Labour, Mr Hatton has pursued careers as a talk-show radio broadcaster, motivational speaker and even a menswear model.

In a recent interview with the Liverpool Daily Post, he expressed his strong ambition to be a Liverpool MP and suggested he may stand as a Labour candidate.

But his comments are certain to anger Gordon Brown.

The Prime Minister has expressed admiration for Lady Thatcher, describing her as a 'conviction politician'.

Last year, it was disclosed that Lady Thatcher has dementia. Since 2002, she has suffered several small strokes and also collapsed at a dinner last year.

A Labour Party spokesman last night refused to comment on Mr Hatton's remarks and said he could not reveal if he was a member of the party.
I am not a Thatcher fan, but looking at what Hatton did in Liverpool I don't think he has any great room to shout.

I've never been a David Hatton fan but there's a brutal honesty about some of his comments that warms my cockles.
