Burgles a house, 18 previous convictions including 7 for burglary, fails to show up for the hearing in court and will be out in well less than a year.

The guy is only 25 years old, obviously shows no pattern of behaving, society should be protected. Lord knows how many undetected crimes he's committed, the national detection rate for burglary is 20%, so if we know he has done 8 burglaries, that means you could predict he's actually done 40.

Execute him in the town square.

You have to go back 40 years and more to arrive at an age when fellows like this were dealt with properly. Back then, he would never have been granted bail for the offence of housebreaking. Also, the courts considered that for all of us our homes were our castles. The sentence for this type of recidivist would have been at least 5 years. He might have received parol but not until having served at least two thirds of his time.
Only the politicians and the criminal courts can make a real difference to the state of things in this country, but they abandoned us in favour of liberal, wishy -washy justice decades ago.

How the heck do we deal with such people though . The part answer seems to be to create a more equal society through better education and apprenticeships etc leading to more hope, jobs and opportunities, so that people can afford to buy the things they need/want ,instead of giving up and turning to crime -- but that will only address a % of offenders . Maybe the case in post 1 is in this category.

However, too many people (imho) ,including those coping adequately, turn to crime because they seem to believe that regardless of their skills, effort, ability, work ethic or any other reality, they are entitled to have an endless source of easy money which enables them to have the same material lifestyle as someone who can legitimatly afford anything they like .

Maybe this 'Im entitled regardless' attitude imho has been induced by the namby pamby attitudes which have grown popular in childcare-- illustrated by such things as 'pass the parcel must have a sweet in every unwrap' , 'bran tub presents must all be of the same value', high value consolation prize for a non winner' 'we dont have losers only runners up', 'no upsetting red crosses on homework' etc, and bigging up childrens self importance FAR beyond what the reality of future life will support .

This has been followed by the misuse of the benefits system going from being a safety net to an alternative lifestyle all because it hasnt been applied or policed properly and 'working' the system is obviously an accepted right ,almost a sport in some quarters. There is also a total lack of respect for other people . It will get worse as ipads etc decrease proper human to human communication.

These social attitudes will take an awfully long time to reverse and I havent got a clue what we do about persistant thieving/cheating etc in the short term. Prisons are full and some research says it doesnt work anyway , yet we shouldnt allow crime to be consequence free.

^^ Thats the liberal leftie nonsense that causes lax sentencing.

Just kill him, society would be better off.

^^ thats the type of attitude that creates segregation and hatred and drives the crime rates up rather than down.

Law works on facts and not opinions thankfully.

Punishment should be progressive, everyone gets a chance to learn from their mistakes and will know their punishment will be more severe the more crimes they commit. Ultimately at the top of the chain should be a prison colony where they go for a proper life sentence.

If they want to be persistently anti-social, they should not be living in society and should not benefit from society's luxuries.

By the 19th offence it is a complete joke to let someone back into society in less than a year, it sends out completely the wrong message - its damn near encouragement to continue.

I'm not totally opposed to capital punishment especially for serial offenders where the risk of wrongful conviction is negligible.

Whatever happened to three strikes and you're out ? I don't think that ever came into force.

perhaps we should take a leaf out of other countries.
Persistant thieving--chop finger off for each offence. If that doesn't work they could become politicians
