Detectives in Wirral are appealing for information following an armed robbery at a newsagents in Bebington on Saturday.

At around 9.40pm, two men entered the shop in Teehey Lane armed with what was thought to be a small handgun and a knife.

They ushered staff and customers to behind the counter, before stealing a quantity of cigarettes and cash.

No-one was injured during the incident but the staff and customers were left distressed by their ordeal.

The raiders arrived at the shop on pedal cycles and then left by riding down Rowland Avenue before abandoning the bikes on Bradley Avenue. The machines have since been recovered and will be forensically examined.

The first robber is aged around 16-to-18, 5ft 5ins, of slim build and wearing a black scarf across his face, a black waterproof jacket and black trousers.

The second is aged around 18 and of slim build, wearing sunglasses with an orange tint, he had a bright blue scarf across his face and a light-green hooded top with black trousers.

Detective Sergeant Mark Watson said: "This must have been a very frightening ordeal for the staff and customers in the shop at the time and we are working hard to identify the people responsible.

"I would ask anyone who was in the area of the shop, or the Bradley Road area where the bikes were dumped, who may have saw this pair acting suspiciously to come forward.

"Any information no matter how small could assist with our investigation."
