A HOMELESS man found dead in a Merseyside waste recycling centre probably died as a result of a tragic accident.

The man was found yesterday morning by staff at B&M Waste Services in Bromborough, Wirral.

Following a post mortem yesterday evening police said the 50-year-old man, of no fixed abode, died of “trauma to his head consistent with crush injuries”.

Following the discovery areas around Liverpool and Wirral were sealed off while officers tried to find out how the man ended up at the recycling centre.

The inquiry is now focused on the Cherry Tree Centre, in Liscard.

DCI Dave McCaughrean said: “Officers will be carrying out enquiries in the area of Cherry Tree Shopping Centre in Liscard to establish if anyone was in the area of the bins on Tuesday night and to ascertain if they have any information which could help our inquiry.

“At this stage it appears to be a tragic accident. But we are keeping an open mind in relation to the circumstances which may have led up to him being at, or near, the bin area and would urge anyone with information to contact the police.”

Officers were called at about 11.40am yesterday to the B&M Waste Services recycling centre, in Dock Road South, and the scene was cordoned off as the investigation got underway.

The family-owned waste and recycling business was established in 1999 and employs more than 170 people in Wirral, Manchester and Leeds.

At Bromborough the company has its own materials recycling facility where the waste collected from local customers is sorted and baled for recycling or sent on for treatment at a third party facility.

A spokeswoman for the recycling company said: “B&M Waste Services can confirm that the body of a male was found at their materials recycling facility on the morning of Wednesday September 5.

“The body has not yet been identified. But it has been confirmed that it is not an individual related to the company. The police were called immediately and are dealing with the matter.”
