Shipbuilding to return to Cammell Laird for first time in 20 years in multi-million pound Western Ferries deal

CAMMELL Laird is set to build its first complete ships in almost 20 years.

The Birkenhead shipyard and engineering firm has beaten off international competition to be named as the preferred bidder to build two new vessels for Western Ferries in what would be a multi-million pound deal.

Both ferries would be used on Western’s Gourock to Dunoon route, in Scotland.

Cammell Laird is already building the flight decks and other sections of the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, in a deal worth £44m.

But the two ferries would be the first complete vessels the yard has built since the completion of the nuclear submarine, HMS Unicorn, in 1993.

Cammell Laird chief executive John Syvret said: “This project is a welcome addition to the already diverse range of offshore, commercial and military projects under way within the yard, and will complement the successful module construction work we have been undertaking in support of the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.

“The awarding of this project demonstrates Cammell Laird’s commitment to the continued growth of the business in all markets.”

The Gourock to Dunoon route has been in operation for 39 years and in 2011 carried more than 1.3m passengers and over 600,000 cars.

Gordon Ross, managing director of Western Ferries, said: “Not only was Cammell Laird’s bid the most commercially competitive, it also provided for the earliest delivery of the vessels, which was a crucial factor for the company and the local community.

“Despite strong international interest, Western Ferries is also very pleased that these new vessels, along with the new vessels introduced in 2001 and 2003, will be fully built in the UK.”

Mr Ross added it is hoped that construction will begin in June this year, with both vessels due to be delivered during the summer of 2013.

Cammell Laird enjoys iconic status thanks to its history of building some of the world’s biggest ship including Cunard’s second Mauretania and the Royal Navy’s HMS Ark Royal.

The Company was founded by William Laird, who had established the Birkenhead Iron Works in 1824, when he was joined by his son, John Laird, in 1828.

The company now operates across a diverse range of engineering sectors, including ship repair and heavy fabrication.

One area the company has identified as having huge potential for growth is the offshore wind sector.

Cammell Laird has the facilities to become a major hub for the assembly and maintenance of giant wind turbines in the Irish Sea.

Spread across 130 acres on the banks of the River Mersey, the firm directly employs 750 people with a similar number working in the local supply chain.

It also employs 80 apprentices.

Oh, how are the mighty fallen; this is so sad. My dad worked for Laird's for 49 years, at a time when thousands were employed.

Amazing how a good news story can be turned into a negative one so quickly!

Yes Lairds is nothing like it was 50 years ago - did I remember right that I heard during WWII a new or refurbished ship was launched every week from the yard! - but it is good that we have a local business that's building something locally employing (some) local people and hopefully with this news some more jobs wil be created.

Now what we need it Peel to get started on the Internation Trade centre and hopefully that will bring some more jobs there too!

Polish are prepared to work for buttons and keep a roof over their head without feeling the need to have the latest cars, ipads or trainers.

British people want to much money to pay for their material lifestyle. The UK needds to stop complaining and make an effort.

You can blame the Polish. You can blame the Government. Being angry and dispondent wont get the country anywhere. If Polish are doing double the work for less money, what does that tell you?

It means that you were never really worth what you were earning anyway. Its economics.

It sucks but its life.

It tells you that there are people with a Dickensian attitude who are prepared to allow workers to work for as little as possible as long as they bear the fruit.

Its a complete joke that the greatest ship building yard in the world is now building a couple ferries because it put in the best offer.

Knock the shit hole down.

Speechless at that comment.............

What would be a complete joke would be if they didn't have any work and had to make everyone left redundant - remember that for at least 10 years noone worked at Lairds at all - at least there's 800 jobs there now and there might be more in the offing!

What everyone has to remember, this establishment bought the name, don't expect them to build Ark Royal's or even be anything like the old Laird. Its like a back street garage buying the old British Leyland name and expecting them turn out a million cars a year.

I wonder if the phrase "Cant save a sinking ship" plays any relevance here.

This is just a small life line delaying the inevitable.

3rd from top which leaves us were in ammount of power. America showed the flag on an exercise, asked the french to join them on it and we had to beg to be a part of it.

Lets face it being at the top is what counts, anything else is a threat.

The British matelots are still the same though, thank God. They feel let down the way things are working out, some of them never get to sea for years, myself I was never anywhere else for my last six years, penance for my lovely shore drafts prior to that I think. Those latest Type 45's are business. I was on Darings and Type 14 frigates when I was in Gens, then Ceylon and Mauritius and then boats, a varied but generally rewarding career.
Back to the thread though, good to see Lairds getting back to building. I wish the docks could get busy again, I was down Pacific Rd this morning and it was sad to see the area so bereft of shipping.

i think its all good. not many shipbuilders left in the uk any more. i would not like to have to tell 80 apprentices they had no job. might get attacked with said i-pads

The useless set of toe rags in London recently came up with a brilliant statement' "We don't build tankers in the UK".
This was their response to questions about why the government had chosen a Korean yard to build RFA tankers.
An Italian company had come up with a plan to go into a partnership with Lairds and Rolls Royce to build them in the UK (presumably at Lairds) but the government told them to sod off.

Unfortunately the last sentance of that article is the most important:

"'The Fincantieri bid did not meet some fundamental requirements and even if it had, it was hundreds of millions more expensive and therefore would have been the wrong choice for UK taxpayers"

Which makes me wonder why they didn't enter a bid that actually met the requirements.......
