WIRRAL is to see high speed broadband allowing computer users to access the internet at ever faster rates.

Residents in Greasby are to start a six month trial which could help propel the UK to the forefront of the digital world.

Volunteers in the area of Halton Crescent will receive next generation services from Virgin Media or TalkTalk for the first time.

It will be delivered by a new fibre optic network created by Fujitsu on the outskirts of Greasby and capable of broadband speeds of 1Gb – almost 150 times faster than the national average.

The fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network is the first to make independent use of BT’s underground ducts and telegraph poles following a ruling by Ofcom in 2010.

And over 7,200 more homes and businesses will have access to faster broadband by the spring of next year, BT announced.

Mountwood is among the latest communities in the region to be included in the roll-out plans for BT’s next generation copper broadband service.

When they start wiring Pensby and Heswall and Barnston/ Brimstage let's know, we seem to be in the back of beyond for anything, including bus services.

Heswall has already got fibre. It went live about 8 weeks ago!

I've had the same speed since 2004 after I upgraded from dial up!
Who needs to upload photos to facebook faster?! What a waste.

Good, the faster I can download my porn the better.

This would rock for home hosting (gaming or ftp for ddl's) or any sort of power user. aka torrent user.

Far from being the back of beyond Heswall Exchange customers (0151 342 XXXX) have been some of the first to have the latest telecoms services. ADSL Broadband was first made available in 2000/2001, one of the first exchanges on Wirral and some 3 years before it was available in other parts. The same for LLU, ADSL max, 21CN etc. Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) is also available in Heswall now, again a Wirral first which can deliver up to 40 Mbps now, some Wirral exchanges still haven't got an enablement date for FTTC which next year will deliver to up to 80 Mbps (Look up BT Fusion).

If you really want to go back a long time Heswall exchage was once the only transmitter site in Wirral for South Lancs Radio phone the first mobile phone service in the country!
See Clicky
The large guyed mast on the roof of the exchage was a familiar site for many years until Storeton mast was built in the early 80s.

I would of thought 50mb would of been sufficient for hosting?

As for download speeds, it takes 1.5 mins to get a full album on 50mb, this new speed would be instant.
I remember the days of the 56k modem.

I use my iPhone to connect to xbox live and have no problems with that so even a 2mb speed should be ok.

The speeds we have now are ok for how we use the web at the moment but super fast broadband will open more possibilities like live streaming hd quality tv/films on demand for example.

50mb downstream translates to about 0.9mb/1.5mb upstream. Usless for all types of hosting. Virgin Media offer a 50mb line.

Depends where you're downloading from, and 50mb doesn't actually = 50mb download speed. If you're getting 9-10 movies at once over irc for example you can be sat there all day. Plus it'll slaughter any other type of internet usage while the downloads are hogging all the bandwidth.

And yeah, I remember getting 2mb videos from videotemple over a 33.6/56k. Good times.

@kev: You can do this from any decent source now over as low as 9-10mb connections. BBC/ITV are pretty useless for this, you'd have to go to pirate sources to get decent speeds. Kind of ironic.

I hate to do this but "2400 baud on Atari ST" in 1990. laugh

Apparently they're asking for volunteers. Nobody's asked me... Still waiting to hear about this six month trial!

I have 50mb, it is super fast but wouldnt mind 1gb how amazin would that be. I got told of from virgin media for one weekend downloading about 300gb, saying its wreaking other users in the areas connection smirk

It might not be asynchronous on fibre or possibly less so.
