Elderly woman kept in coma after Wirral crash with dangerous driver

A MAN without a driving licence and car insurance was jailed for 14 months after ploughing into a car in a stolen van.

Christopher Brunt drove the stolen Ford Transit van through a give way junction in Bidston, Wirral, just before midnight. Police officers, who had spotted the stolen vehicle on Green Lane, saw him as the 30-year-old careered straight over the crossroads and into a Honda Civic driven by Mujib Awan.

Liverpool Crown Court heard Mr Awan suffered nasty injuries and was badly shocked, but it was his 75-year-old mum Shamin, who was in the front passenger seat, who took the brunt of the impact.

Mrs Awan suffered fractures to her ribs, collarbone, and had wrist. The pensioner also had fluid on her spleen and suspected bleeding on her brain. She was kept in an induced coma and was on the critical list in hospital for several days.

The Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe QC said: "For somebody of that age, with those injuries, quite clearly she is gong to have significant pain and suffering for a long time to come."

He added: "The accident could have been prevented. Instead there was a serious collision with serious consequence.

The judge jailed Brunt, of Stanley Road, Birkenhead, for 14 months, adding that his criminal record was a severely aggravating factor.

Brunt has 46 convictions for 106 offences, including 26 for motor crime and 22 convictions for stealing from cars.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking on January 19 and John Weate, defending, said Brunt was genuinely remorseful for the injuries he had caused. He told how Brunt was now making considerable progress.

He said: "His family, his partner and his children don’t deserve to go through this again."

Brunt was disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to take an extended re-test.

Cut his arms off from the elbows and his legs from the knees - he won't be able to steal or drive again!! No prosthetics for him and no care paid for by the state!!

Failing that, just shoot him. Saves him polluting the gene pool!
He won't even do 14 month properly about 6 enything he will have time knocked of if he keeps his head down an then more than likely get out on tag - pure ... !!! These are the people who drag Birkenhead ddown in to the gutter
