Wirral woman appears in court following mother's death

AN Oxton woman accused of causing or allowing the death of her elderly mother has appeared in court.

Helena Turnbull, a former registered nurse, had been due to face trial at Liverpool Crown Court accused of unlawfully killing her 77-year-old mum, Maureen Frances Turnbull, but she instead pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

Turnbull, 52, admitted that her mother, a vulnerable adult, died on or about December 6, 2009 and she had committed an unlawful act in that being aware of the significant risk of serious physical harm to her had failed to take appropriate steps.

Her barrister, Simon Killeen, said that Turnbull accepted her care of her mother was "sub-standard" in the two weeks" before her death. She herself had been to her GP in that period with her own problems.

The judge, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said that Turnbull had been the sole carer of her mother and she had not looked after her such that she contracted serious infections which were a significant cause of her death.

Turnbull, of Shrewsbury Road, Oxton, was further remanded in custody to await sentence on April 15.
