Wirral leads street celebrations for royal wedding

WIRRAL people have shown their patriotic spirit in the run-up to the royal wedding with far more applications for parties than neighbouring Liverpool.

According to a Wirral Council spokeswoman, 34 applications for road closures have been received – easily toppling Liverpool’s four requests for street celebrations.

Sefton has 30 applications in for street parties. There have been only five for St Helens and West Lancashire.

With less than four weeks until Prince William and Kate Middleton say "I do" would-be hosts now have to wait and see if council officers approve their requests.

The deadline was March 29 and residents were encouraged to apply after town hall bosses waived the usual £150 fee to close roads.

Council leader Cllr Jeff Green said: "The whole country will want to celebrate Kate Middleton and Prince William's wedding in April and we want to play our part in helping local people do that.

"We had a fantastic success last year with the Big Lunch events held up and down the borough. It really helps foster community spirit."
