River Mersey rescue for fishing boat after running aground

A FISHING boat was rescued after running aground on the banks of the River Mersey.

The 25-metre (82ft) long vessel broke down with seven crew on board two miles off Formby Point.

Liverpool Coastguard was called out to help the vessel, which reported gearbox failure, at 3am.
The falling tide left the vessel grounded. It was towed off the sandbank at about 9am today (Saturday, April 2).

Michael Johnson, watch manager, said:“The fishing vessel was leaving Liverpool when she got into difficulty and broke down in the Crosby channel.”

He said an RNLI lifeboat from Hoylake was launched and New Brighton lifeboat was on standby.
