Teenage cyclist ‘critical’ after being hit by car in Birkenhead

A TEENAGE cyclist was in a critical condition today, after he was hit by a car on a busy Merseyside road.

Police were called to Tower Wharf, in Birkenhead, at 7.20pm yesterday evening after reports of a collision between a bike and a blue Fiat Punto.

The 13-year-old cyclist suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Alder Hey hospital for treatment.

Police last night described his condition as critical.

The driver of the Punto was unhurt and stopped at the scene.

The 36-year-old man is helping police with their inquiries.

Tower Wharf was closed to traffic for about four hours last night while officers examined the scene of the collision.

Merseyside police today appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact the Road Collision Investigation Team on 0151-777 5771.

Alternatively, call the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111 with details.

THE GLOBE
We pay enough road tax to fund more cycle lanes so why isn't this happening?

Hope the kids ok.
There seems to be an increase in gangs of kids out and about on bikes, especially in the Tranmere/Rock Ferry area.
Non of them have any lights, or any road sense for that matter.
There's one group who use the Lidl car park so at least they're not on the main road.
A couple of nights ago at about 7PM I had to slam on the brakes going UP Well Lane when three of them came flying down on the wrong side of the road. Again, no lights so these kids are difficult to spot in time.
At least they acknowledged me.........with the obligatory V sign. smack

Yup I have noticed this too, Its quite hard to spot a cyclist without lights. I remember when I was younger I didnt have lights as they were big and looked stupid and cost a fair bit too. Now you can pick a set up from poundland....its not a large ammount to save your childs life is it parents.

Hope the little guy makes it through none the less!

Something tells me that more than a few of these 'parents' are just happy to see the back of their 'little darlings' for a few hours.
Lights aren't important to them because if a car hits the kid on his bike then it's the drivers fault innit?
After all the car has got big headlights so the driver can see everything right ?

I too hope the lad comes through it ok.
But what if he doesn't ?
What if he didn't have any lights and the car driver had little or no chance of seeing him ?
If that was the scenario imagine how the driver must be feeling !
I know, it cant be easy for him right now.
hope the lad is ok xxx
Doesn't sound like he had a helmet on either. What price your safety!?!
