Wirral Works: Team Challenge initiative launches to open up opportunities for youngsters

A CHALLENGE is being offered to Wirral’s young people – to take part in an exciting new initiative that could change their lives.

The Wirral News and Wirral Metropolitan College are launching Team Challenge, an ongoing two-week programme at the college aimed at 16- to18-year-olds.

Over a period of a fortnight, Wirral Met will introduce young people to new skills that could open up a world of opportunities for them.

The first course begins in March ... but it will become a rolling programme.

Wirral Met’s Assistant Principal Sue Higginson said: “Team Challenge is all about Wirral’s young people having a chance to find out about themselves, what they want to be and what they want to do with their lives.

“They will be introduced to some amazing opportunities in a fun environment but, throughout it all, the college will be leading them on a voyage of discovery to give them a taste of the many and varied options that can lead to success in life. For some, it could lead to further education or training; for others, it could lead to a job or apprenticeship they have dreamed of.”

Team Challenge is open to anyone not currently involved in education and training who was aged 16, 17 or 18, as of August 31, 2010. The series of two-week programmes will consist of three days each week, five hours each day, with each day offering a diverse range of activities. Travel passes, as applicable, and lunch will be provided.

They will be able to take part in Wirral Met CSI, finding out about crime scenes and forensics, joining in Art Attack with the college’s art tutors and seeing how the Style Challenge day offers opportunities in hairdressing and beauty.

Construction Challenge will be all about the building industry, Young Chefs will showcase what’s cooking in the college kitchen and there will also be a chance for some fun learning about IT with interactive computer games.

Team Challenge will end with Hold the Front Page, an activity designed for young delegates to collate their stories about their experiences on the programme.

Wirral Executive Editor Jane Clare said: “This course is the result of some fantastic co-operation between the college and Wirral News.

“We are both enthused that it could be the starting point for a bright new future, for some Wirral youngsters, they in turn will be helping to build the future of Wirral itself.”

The first course beigions on March 1, so there is no time to waste if you want to take part. To find out more about the initiative, ring Wirral Met College on 0151-551 7777 and ask to speak to a Team Challenge Student Adviser.

Agreed Ste. At least we know that some will get up off their arses and have a go and they are the ones that deserve to get something out of it. Power to their elbow.
