POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a crash in Wallasey in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Just after midnight, officers in an unmarked police car spotted a stolen Ford Transit Connect van on Hoylake Road, Birkenhead.

They requested a marked police vehicle to attend to stop the van.

While the unmarked police car was following it, the van crashed with a Honda Civic car at the junction of Green Lane and Barmouth Road, Wallasey.

The 45-year-old driver of the Civic received minor cuts and his 75-year-old passenger was taken to hospital where her condition is described as critical.

A 16-year-old youth from the Birkenhead area was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the theft of the Ford Transit van, which was stolen overnight between Sunday, January 16 and Monday, January 17, from Eleanor Road in Bidston to come forward.

They would also like to hear from anyone who may know where the vehicle has been up until the collision or who may have been driving it.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Roads Policing Depertment on 0151 777 5771, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The matter has been referred to the Force's Professional Standards Department (PSD) as well as the IPCC who are content for Merseyside Police's PSD to carry out the investigation.

That was the morning when there was a lot of freezing fog around. I have CCTV all around the house (on Green Lane) but reviewing the tape there is nothing there - understandable because the cameras look onto our premises and not (much) out onto the road.
