The Dock on Freeman Street has been set on fire, and the old bill are camped outside waiting for the fire brigade to give the building the all clear.

No one was hurt in the fire, even the cats got out OK

Sounds like arson. We had our works xmas doo in there years ago. Great old pub with lots of boxing pics on the walls.
Posted By: BigMumf Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 3rd Jan 2011 10:15pm
Used to be loads of boxing pics, it's more of a rock/alternative place for young goths these days!
Posted By: Waddi Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 3rd Jan 2011 10:17pm
anyone got any pics, could really do with some info, how bad it is etc.
Posted By: Bezzymate Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 3rd Jan 2011 10:19pm
Was it the Mcintyre brothers or a similar name, who where the boxers and owners?
Posted By: bert1 Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 3rd Jan 2011 10:33pm
Les McAteer, i think your thinking of Bezzy, Jason McAteer ex Liverpool and Tranmere player is part of the family, not sure if they had anything to do with the pub.
Posted By: Bezzymate Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 3rd Jan 2011 10:35pm
That's him,he ran the pub and was a really nice man. Thanks Bert.

A MAN and a woman were rescued from the roof of a Merseyside pub after it caught fire.
Firefighters were called to the Dock Hotel, in Birkenhead, shortly before 6pm yesterday.
Crews were called to the detached pub in Freeman Street after the blaze tore through the ground-floor bar area.

Funny how prime building plots around here catch fire. Sorry for the poor buggers caught up on the roof though it must have been very frightening. These arsonists don't think about the people who are in the premises and they only get minimal sentences when they're caught.

It's strange the amount of buildings catching fire due to arson in that area in Birkenhead?! Surely someone more official is thinking the same thing?
Posted By: KevinFinity Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 4th Jan 2011 4:48pm
Its also strange that they just happened to be in financial trouble and where expecting to close by the end of the year. I can't reveal my source for that on here but I was told it by someone I know well who was in a position to know about it.
Posted By: diggingdeeper Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 4th Jan 2011 5:24pm
It did have a for sale sign on it - I think these signs should be issued with a safety warning - "beware, flammable material"
Posted By: PinkyJolley Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 4th Jan 2011 5:38pm
Would just like to clarify that your statement is untrue! x
Posted By: PinkyJolley Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 4th Jan 2011 5:40pm
The premises was for sale, not the business. Purely just a chane of ownership. x

Not been allowed back in yet !! x

Minimum of 5 years for arson now.
Endangering life as well ? Bad that tut tut.
Posted By: PinkyJolley Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 4th Jan 2011 6:33pm
There was a petrol bomb thrown through the pool room window whilst the pub owners where asleep upstairs!!!

The Dock has too strong a following to knock!

WE'LL BE BACK !!!! xxx

That's what happens when you don't pay your protection costs.
Posted By: anniebo28 Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 4th Jan 2011 6:55pm
I loved the dock, hadn't been in a few years though.
I remember going there when I was 15, getting in through the side door at 7am on a Saturday and Sunday morning, trays of food on the bar and the whole pub pack with early bird drinkers! As soon as the other pubs opened at 12, the place would empty out.
Great memories! smile

This forum asks that people are considerate in their responses to the News stories that are regarding local news.
As the proprietor of The Dock and also the person that was awoken by the fire alarm, trapped on the roof of a burning building and someone who had to wake my wife and alert her to the serious danger someone had put our lives in, I am then alerted to people making judgements that my business was in finacial difficulty, it was quite the opposite as we were going from strength to strength and were very much looking forward to our second year.

Fire bomb through the front window (by the pool table) at 18:00 hrs Monday night. Lainey & Tony were upstairs, which is why it's now being classed as attempted murder.

They're staying with friends at the moment, but are looking for another pub, if anyone hears of anything....

Took the Submariners from Lincoln in there a couple of years ago and they loved it. Hope it gets reopened, and soon. Just glad everyone is ok.
Posted By: BigMumf Re: Fire at The Dock Pub - 5th Jan 2011 9:40pm
It's 'most unlikely' that the pub will be open again soon, if at all. The pub was on the market anyway, so this is like the final straw.

It'll be interesting to see what happens, as the site is on the edge of the proposed development area!!
