There's explosions, and massive flames, down by Green Lane, I can here it in my flat, and driving back before the area is full of thick smoke and burning embers floating around and bits of tyre. Could pop down and get pics but my tea is in the oven...

I live in bebington village and I can smell the fire and see a pall of black smoke and the smokes comming this way

any more info? pics?
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 12th Apr 2010 10:27pm
I went out, and my car is covered in burnt black crap!! I took one pic, but you can't get anywhere near it, the polic have shut off the A41 completely from the tunnel exit/Argyle St roundabout etc... All the traffic is now diverting down Old Chester Road. Its deffo not Green Lane Scrapyard, as I drove past there. Up neaerer Kerr Channs, so petrol station theory could be correct, or possibly Bathers??

Will grab the single pic I took.

Looked like it was just behind the petrol station, gas bottles were going, flames shot across New Chester Road for a while. Police cordoned of nearly quarter of a mile radius.

No houses or flats in any danger.

Looks to me like it was the John Braid that went up, may have started next door though.
Posted By: starakita Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 13th Apr 2010 12:19am
could be the scrapyard.
Posted By: GixerAde Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 13th Apr 2010 12:21am
I think it might be th old Mini spares place, or the gas bottle place nextdoor to it.
Posted By: Janey Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 13th Apr 2010 12:22am
well to be honest if the gas place has gone up the spares place has too and if they both gone up then so has the petrol station.... i think it has to be all three otherwise the flames wouldnt be soo bad???
Posted By: diggingdeeper Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 13th Apr 2010 12:24am
I'm pretty sure the petrol station was alright and while a few bottles went it certainly didn't sound like the whole calor gas yard.

Mersey tunnel is still closed. The round about by green lane petrol sation is still closed. Green lane petrol station still closed. I could not get any closer than green lane petrol station.

Shot a little video of the area, could not get pictures as I've not set the camera up yet.

Looks like it was the gas place near the petrol station?

From the Liverpool Echo:

Gas blasts shock as inferno engulfs Wirral warehouse

Apr 13 2010

A HUGE EXPLOSION in a warehouse next to Cammell Lairds was being tackled by firefighters from across Merseyside this morning as flames were seen to be leaping 30ft into the air.

The inferno, which was being tackled by 70 firefighters at its height, is believed to have started in a John S Braid owned warehouse adjacent to Cammell Lairds on Campbeltown Road, on Wirral docklands.

John S Braid is an international logistics and freight company. It is not yet known how the fire started.

As firefighters battled to contain the raging fire there were concerns about the fire reaching the ship yard, a nearby petrol station and a Calor gas store. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud explosions as they believed acetylene or gas cylinders were catching fire.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “This is a significant fire and firefighters fought the fire defensively to stop it spreading.

“We have used what we call a water curtain to try and stop the fire in its tracks. The flames came be seen across the River Mersey in Liverpool. It is too early to determine how or when the fire started but we will be opening an investigation.

“Luckily there are no residential homes nearby which makes our job a bit easier. We received the call at 10.30pm last night.

“We have received over 70 calls to our control room with many of those from Liverpool which gives an indication of how big it is.”

Paul Power, 23, a supervisor at KFC near to the fires epicentre was evacuated by police who closed the A41 at the entrance to the Birkenhead Tunnel to the Rock Ferry by-pass.

Mr Power said: “We could see smoke out the window and then the police arrived and told us that we have to evacuate.

“When we got outside it was evident that it was a massive fire. I have never seen anything like it. There were explosions going off continually as gas canisters were going off.

“The flames were leaping 30ft into the air and a crowd was gathering to watch. It was an incredible sight and the firefighters were battling to control it.

“They seemed to be really struggling.”

Photographer Paul Griffiths said the entire structure of the warehouse was melting. He said: “I got very close to it, maybe too close. The whole of the building was on fire and was buckling in the heat of the fire.

“The fire seemed to be moving backwards towards the River Mersey. I've never seen flames like it. My parents in Prenton could hear what we think must have been gas cylinder explosions.

“People in streets nearby were being told to shut their windows and stay inside but there was a massive crowd as hundreds of people came out to watch it.”

Eyewitness Richard Parker said: “There seem to be multiple fires as the fire is spreading. The fire fighters aren't just training the water onto the fire but on to the street as well. They seem to be trying to dampen it down to stop it from spreading.

“It is an incredible sight, it is as if a thick fog has descended over Rock Ferry, New Ferry and Port Sunlight. It is only getting thicker. The smoke plume is reaching 200 metres into the air.”

All buildings were evacuated as fire fighters did their best to stop the fire spreading. The police helicopter circled overhead monitoring the fire.

Force Incident Manager Inspector Swan said: “We are monitoring the situation closely. Our role has been to close the A41 and divert traffic.

“We are working closely with our emergency service colleagues.”

Haha ill be in the que first! The smell really is bad. Just walked past the shell petrol station its closed but still got staff in! Debris on the road looks like its melted the tarmac. Suppose it smelt like that in the war! Cant blame the germans on this one!
Posted By: Hiekel_Essterol Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 13th Apr 2010 3:05pm
Dont know whether its related or not but this morning driving north on the M53 all I could smell in the air was Savlon. Dont know whether it was coming from the smoke from the fire. I wondered what the fire brigade were doing? Putting plasters on it and kissing it better? Clearing up the scorch marks with mummy spit?

In all seriousness those boys have had one hell of a job by the sound of it. Hope everyone remains safe.

Can anyone tell me what the current situation with the A41 is right now, both north and southbound? Have to go both ways in about 40 mins.

Thats great guys, cheers for the rapid update.

My apartments are located on Old Chester Road, and the traffic is a constant traffic jam and is only going to get worse as the rush hour progresses, deffo one area to avoid if you can.

As for the smell, it is awful, still a terrible smell of burning, I can't open my windows or doors etc... and its not good, the apartments are insulated to 2010 standards obviously, which means its not losing any real heat, and its like a fookin oven in here right now, the temp gauge is at 33 degrees right now!! Tis rediculous, im getting through a litre of orange juice an hour atm haha!

There was already minor fire damage to the building from a lorry trailer that had been set alight. More arson do we think, accidental, or something else?

Just realised I used to work in there when they made parts for Vauxhall! Drove out of the Mersey tunnel and christ, what a stench!
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 14th Apr 2010 11:52am
If the fireman was right and if the asbestos was in the building structure, then someone's for it big time. It's been banned for ages. It's been banned for much longer than Tin Town has been there.

Maybe stuff stored within the sheds contained asbestos?

Again, if the fireman's correct in his analysis, then everyone downwind of the plume has a legacy they've never even dreamt of !!

The lawyers are already ordering their new flash motors and mansions !!!!
Posted By: diggingdeeper Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 14th Apr 2010 1:06pm
The firemen weren't masked, they haven't excluded people from the area, the buildings are relatively new - all points to no known asbestos present.

Bigger worry is the benzine products etc given off by the burning plastic, a lot of these are major carcinogens.
Posted By: derekdwc Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 14th Apr 2010 1:39pm
Do firemen have any sort of detectors or ways of monitoring for different sorts of chemicals that may be in the air when they first arrive at a fire

We have a fireman somewhere on wiki who may tell us more

Dont think its asbestos, next door is Sims recycling, and they used to recycle fridges! Talking to their engineer in the Ellesmere Port plant today and they recon that their damage is about £3 million!!! They also had a load of foam insulation from fridges stored that went up!!! Not good for the old ozone!!!!
Posted By: jimbob Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 14th Apr 2010 8:25pm
that tin town your talking about. would like to point out that the original steel structures of those sheds where errectet {built] in the late 40s. i watched them been cladded in the original black sheetin when i was a lad and hanging around on Warrens fieled. Warrens field was the piece of grass land to the south of the corporation destructer yard which is where the gas bottle place is now

The large building was built in the early 60's as the stores building for the Polaris submarine project. It later became the shipyard's general stores. The cladding was corrugated steel ,not asbestos panels.

No it was definitely from this side and drifting towards Liverpool. Thick black clouds of smoke but it didn't last too long.
Posted By: jimbob Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 17th Apr 2010 6:50pm
the smoke you saw may have come from the sheds on New Chester road, the fire brigade where back there late this afternoon due to the fire or a new one in the sheds had flared up

Posted By: Waddi Re: Massive Fire In Birkenhead - 17th Apr 2010 7:18pm
It was being demolished today, Fire Brigade may have been for that and the cloud of smoke may have actually been a cloud of dust.

Could see it while driving along Arrowe Park Rd just past Landican.

There was a kind've large fire at the side of the M53 around this time (J2 - J3). It was caused by sparks from the train on dry grass.

Blaze engulfs Wirral warehouse twice in one week

Apr 17 2010 by Tina Miles, Liverpool Echo

A HUGE blaze swept through a warehouse in Merseyside today – the second fire there in just a week.

Fire fighters were called to the derelict building next to Cammell Lairds as smoke poured into the air.

Earlier this week, crews fought to contain a massive explosion in a warehouse on Campbeltown Road, on Wirral docklands.

The first inferno, which was tackled by 70 firefighters at its height, was believed to have started in a John S Braid owned warehouse on Monday evening.

John S Braid is an international logistics and freight company.

As firefighters battled to contain the flames, which leapt 30ft into the air, there were concerns about it reaching the ship yard, a nearby petrol station and a Calor gas store.

Merseyside Fire Service today said they were called to the same location on Campbeltown Road today at 2.50pm following reports of another fire.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said they would return to the site later tonight to ensure the area was safe.

She said: “We went back out there today and had four appliances in attendance at the derelict building.

“It was caused by oil from an electrical transformer that had caught fire.”
