Wigan youth used emails to 'groom' teenage Wirral girl

A YOUTH who used emails to groom a 13-year-old Wirral girl and also downloaded indecent child porn was given an eight month suspended prison sentence.

A judge told 19-year-old John Williams: "It is clear from the messages passed between you that you were grooming that girl.

"You told her you loved her, not because you did but to make her feel wanted so she would be more amenable to exposing parts of her body to you.

"You persuaded her, I am sure against her better instincts," said Judge Nigel Gilmour, QC.

"You corrupted that 13-year-old girl and you incited her to expose her body to you.

"This was not a teenage prank, this was a course of behaviour over a period of some weeks," he said.

"I have no doubt when confronted by her mother she felt ashamed and guilty at what she had agreed to do.

"This has caused considerable distress to her and her family.

"One can only imagine what distress you would have felt if it had been your own sister subjected to this sort of behaviour from another 18-year-old."

Judge Gilmour described the video of the two children as making "disgusting viewing".

Liverpool Crown Court heard that Williams behaviour came to light after the girl's mother used her daughter's laptop computer and saw various items which led to her alerting the police.

The girl was quizzed and admitted she enjoyed the attention and would have been willing to meet Williams but had never done so.

When he was interviewed by police, Williams, who was 18 at the time, admitted asking her to send naked photographs of herself and knew she was only 13.

He said he had asked to meet her but had no intention of doing so.

Judge Gilmour said that he believed he would have gone on to meet her.

When his computer was analysed as well as the email traffic, 41 indecent images and an indecent video involving two children aged about nine having sex, were found.

Williams, of Macdonald Street, Orrell, Wigan, said that he had searched for images of teenagers but stumbled across child porn which he deleted.

Simon Christie, prosecuting, said that analysis showed that a large number of files had been deleted by him.

Williams pleaded guilty to inciting a 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity between July 1 and September 30, 2008 and four charges of making indecent images.

He was sentenced to eight months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.

He will be under supervision for two years and must attend the Northumbria Sex Offenders course.

Nicola Daley, defending, said that Williams had been arrested in October 2008 and he had grown up "an awful lot in the last year".

He now realises the seriousness of what he did and acknowledges he cannot speak to someone of that age in the terms he did.

He wants to apologise to the girl and her family.

She pointed out that all but two of the indecent images were in the lowest category involving posing.
