WIRRAL’S iconic Birkenhead town hall could house a new John Peel Centre.

Wirral Council has invited The Hamilton Partnership to proceed to the final stage of a process to secure a new, sustainable use for the building.

The Hamilton Partnership proposes to use the building to create The John Peel Centre, in tribute to the Heswall born legendary DJ, for community, innovation and the creative arts.

Under their plans, the venue would include theatre and studio space, arts workshops and academy, the John Peel archive, business and enterprise centre, a wedding and conference venue and a resource centre for the community and voluntary sector.

Merseytravel also looks set to take over Wirral’s Pacific Road Arts Centre and Wirral Transport Museum and Tramway.

The council was looking for others to take over both buildings as part of the Strategic Asset Review to dispose of buildings the authority does not need.

Cllr Steve Foulkes, the leader of Wirral Council, said: “The Hamilton Partnership has been invited to provide the council with a full, viable business plan on their proposals within the next six months.

“Officers’ knowledge and expertise will be available to support them, however, I must stress that there are no guarantees at this stage and the future ownership of Birkenhead Town Hall will depend entirely on the strength and sustainability of the Partnership’s final submission.”

Wirral Council’s ruling cabinet also approved recommendations that the authority’s director of law negotiate and conclude legal documentation to allow Merseytravel to take over the arts centre site.

Cllr Steve Foulkes, Leader of Wirral Council said: “Merseytravel submitted an extremely strong bid, which importantly, supports our aspirations for the future of the borough.”

A Merseytravel spokesperson said: “We're pleased to have been nominated as the preferred bidder for the Pacific Road Arts Centre, Wirral Transport Museum and Tramway.

“We feel the centre, museum and tramway all have potential and would complement our portfolio of world class tourism attractions based around the famous Mersey Ferries.”
