40 Royal Navy aircraft flypast of Liverpool's Mersey waterfront
THE incredible sight of 40 Royal Naval aircraft of all vintages and types flying along the Mersey will take place on Friday at 2pm.
Nothing like it has been seen before over the Mersey, as the aircraft will approach from the south for the ceremonial fly-past over Liverpool Pier Head, before flying towards the river mouth.
This will be the highlight of the Royal Navy’s great northern celebration of its centenary of flying.
The event will start tomorrow with the arrival of HMS Illustrious, the UK’s strike aircraft carrier, which will dock at Liverpool Cruise Liner Terminal at 2pm and remain until Tuesday.
Fly Navy 100 marks the 100th anniversary of the Fleet Air Arm and Naval Aviation.
HRH Prince Andrew Duke of York and Commander-in-Chief Fleet Admiral Sir Trevor Soar will take the salute during Friday’s fly-past.
Later, the RN’s Black Cats Lynx helicopters will give a display off Albert Dock at 4pm.
On Saturday there will be RN role demonstrations (eg pirate hostage rescue) at 2.30pm-3.30pm, repeated on Sunday at 11.30am-12.30pm, all off Albert Dock.
Illustrious is open free to the public on Sunday at 1pm-5pm and Monday 10am-4pm
