Travel agent tied up in Kirkby raid

A MERSEYSIDE travel agent was tied up today by raiders who fled with thousands of pound.

It is believed the worker at Co-op Travel, in St Chad’s Parade, Kirkby town centre, was dragged upstairs when two men burst in through the back of the shop and attacked her.

It is thought they drove up to the rear of the premises in a grey van and forced their way inside just before 10am.

According to reports they were dressed as security guards.

The terrified assistant was made to get down on the floor while she was tied up.

The thugs then emptied the safe.

It is believed they got away with just under £50,000. It is not yet known if they were armed.

The scene was sealed off by police and paramedics were called to the store.

Neil Lancaster, 43, was working at the next-door cake shop which is being renovated, at the time of the raid.

He said: “What concerns me is what if we had walked out to pick up more tiles – it could have been us hit.”

Jon Thom, a security guard at nearby New Look, was patrolling the back of the shops at the time.

He said: “There’s normally guards walking up and down here. But these guys have just got in and out by the look of things.”

The guard added:“You need to know the code to come in through the back and get the vehicle barrier lifted up.”

Across the road at the Banana Bunch grocers Elaine Kearns said: “It’s really frightening isn’t it? Those girls have just gone in to do a day’s work and this has happened to them. I’ve worked in Kirkby for nine years and nothing like this has happened before.”

Anyone with information is asked to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
