Heatwave kills off fish in Wallasey Central Park

THE heatwave has killed hundreds of fish in a lake at Wallasey's Central Park.

Several readers called the Globe to complain about the sight of the fish floating on the surface.

A council spokesman said: “It is obviously a distressing thing to happen and a distressing thing for visitors to the park to see.

"Fish deaths like this can happen during a period of hot weather when the water heats up and drains much of the oxygen that fish need to survive.

“Thanks to the recent restoration project, the lakes in Birkenhead Park now have aeration equipment installed to regulate oxygen levels.

"It would be fantastic to have similar in-built systems in all our lakes and ponds but they are extremely costly and, for some of the more shallow lakes like the one at Central Park, not actually suitable.

“Officers from the Environment Agency have visited Central Park in the wake of the incident this week and we are looking at ways to oxygenate the water.”

Do fish have noses?

Fountains cost money.
Filtration costs money.
Council won't fork out for Central Park as its not got the cash and probably can't get the cash as its not got the same status as Birkenhead Park.
