Wirral's Hippys take rock magazine's 'Battle of the bands' title

HIPPYS on the Hill have won a battle of the bands contest organised by Classic Rock magazine.

The Wallasey-based rock group – whose members are students at Weatherhead and Mosslands' schools – were pitted against a much older and established band that has toured extensively in Britain and Europe.

As winners, the Hippys will get a spot on a forthcoming Classic Rock covermount CD, taking their music to 70,000 rock fans around the world, confirming the band's 'one to watch' reputation.

Classic Rock magazine said: "One listen to Hippys On The Hill and you'll probably be astounded to learn that the average age of this quartet is a mere 16 years old.

"But despite their tender age, this bunch are veterans in their local area that's Wallasey in Wirral.

Their victory is even more astounding as – in round four of the competition - the band were up against much older and established musicians who have toured with the Stone Gods (made up of ex-members of The Darkness) and established rock act Black Stone Cherry."

Hippys' frontman/guitarist Brad Done explains: "It started off as an indie band then it became more punky, then we finally got to the style we have now.

"We don't say we’re going to write a punk or a rock song, we just start jamming and then it evolves from there."

Forthcoming dates include a record company showcase at the Academy Liverpool on May 1, Zanzibar, Liverpool, on May 9, and Hub Festival, Liverpool, on May 24.
