Pregnant Wirral mum-of-two jailed for benefit fraud

A pregnant mother-of-two who cheated the benefits system out of more than £26,000 has been jailed for six months.

"This was blatant dishonesty," Katherine Gersham was told by Judge Bryn Holloway.

29-year-old Gershman found herself in the dock at Liverpool Crown Court after failing to tell the authorities that she was living with her partner, the father of her children, and continued receiving tax credits.

"Benefits are not designed to be treated as an extra source of income for those in financial difficulties who have over-stretched themselves,. Many people in similar circumstances to you do not try to cheat the system," said Judge Holloway.

"You took the decision deliberately and quite dishonestly not to reveal the fact that not only were you living with your partner but had actually married," he said.

Gersham, of Pleasington Close, Prenton, pleaded guilty to four offences of dishonestly obtaining tax credits between April 2004 and April last year involving £26,274.

Teresa Loftus, defending, said that Gresham, whose children were born in 2000 and 2003, has no previous convictions.

She works as a librarian in a sixth-form college and has recently discovered that she is expecting her third child.

Her husband will probably have to give up his job to look after their children if she is jailed, said Miss Loftus.
