A 39-year-old man spoken to by the police at 1.45am after he was seen sitting in his damaged vehicle at Gayton commented: “I’ve been such an idiot. I have just crashed my car”.

Tests on Gregory John Plowman, of Mostyn Avenue, Heswall, showed he had drunk nearly two-and-a-half times the permitted alcohol level.

Plowman pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he appeared before District Judge Nick Sanders at Wirral Magistrates Court.

Quentin Neale, defending, said Plowman had been under pressure in his job and also domestically.

He had been drinking in Liverpool but used public transport to go home.

Everything was on top of him and he made the decision to drive to Heswall shore for some time to himself.

He had an accident and the police became involved.

The judge told Plowman he had some sympathy with him but he could not condone drink-driving.

It was a high reading and he posed a danger to himself and others through taking to the wheel.

Plowman was fined £500 plus £80 costs and his licence was taken away for 20 months.
