A TEENAGER was left fighting for his life after being hit by a bus in Liverpool city centre.

The 19-year-old, named locally as Kieran Connolly, was struck by the single decker number 82 in Copperas Hill, close to the Adelphi Hotel.

Horrified onlookers saw the accident at around 2.50pm yesterday.

They said the teenager had just stepped off the pavement as the bus came round the corner from Renshaw Street.

An A&E doctor on his way to work and a third-year medical student were among the people who rushed to help him until the paramedics arrived.

Customers in the Vines pub on the corner of the junction also came out to do what they could.

The ambulance took him to the Royal Liverpool Hospital but he was later transferred to the specialis Walton neurological centre where his parents were with him.

It is understood he has head injuries and was suffering from bleeding on the brain.

A hospital spokesman said late last night: “His condition is critical and his parents have been advised as such.”

Police sealed off the area around the junction of Copperas Hill and Renshaw Street for more than three hours as accident investigators examined the scene.

The male bus driver was aid to be visibly shaken and treated for shock at the scene.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call Merseyside Police
