THE teenage killer of Rhys Jones will move to a Category A adult prison for his own safety.

Sean Mercer, 18, has already been beaten up twice since being imprisoned last month for the murder of 11-year-old Rhys.

Prison sources believe he is less likely to be attacked in prisons where he will be one among many serious criminals. It is understood that he is currently a target for youths trying to “make a name for themselves”.

Management plans to move him within weeks to HMP Wakefield, Yorkshire, according to a memo sent to senior officials at Wakefield jail by the Ministry Of Justice.

The Category A jail is home to serial child murderer Robert Black, Sarah Payne’s killer Roy Whiting, and paedophile Sidney Cooke.

Mercer has already launched an appeal against his conviction and sentence for the murder of the Liverpool schoolboy.

His legal team have lodged papers with the Court of Appeal in an attempt to overturn the verdict, or reduce the 22- year minimum sentence set by high court judge Mr Justice Irwin.

Mercer killed Everton fan Rhys, 11, just 200 yards from his home in Croxteth Park as he walked home from football practice on Wednesday, August 22, 2007.

The Ministry said it would not comment on the movement of individual prisoners.
